I am going to hang one of my vintage bikes in the house and wanted to get some ideas about how best to display it. I am looking for something minimalist not to take away from the bike. Anyone display a bike in the house?

Cheers,

GG

I got it second hand but it looks identical to the oak mounts I've seen on amazon.

I looked at a few other options but this seemed to be the best option. Hole spacing is 16in on center so you can mount it with two screws directly into the studs. It's shocking how many mounts are out there that use odd spacing and rely on wall anchors. I know anchors can hold the weight, but why bother putting large holes in your wall if it isn't nessisary. If we take this down we only have two small holes to fill.

My only gripe, they made it wide enough to hold flat bars. I modified this one so a 42cm drop is a few millimeters off the wall.

The sun must be murder on anything that spends a significant amount of time there. Do you rotate things through, or just "condemn" some items to the front and live with the consequences?

Some time ago I wanted a wall mounted display made from wood. I did a lot of research and here is the nicest one that I found. Very organic.

I looked at that one too but the 11in dimension prevents you from spanning two studs. (personal preferance)

I noticed 11 inch thing also but he says you need to mount on studs. How does that work?

Magic screws?

I guess you could center it on one stud and put two screws in vertically. I chalk it up to most of these etsy sellers putting form over function.

Thanks so far for the ideas. Still haven't seen what I'm looking for. Etsy has lots of cool wooden hangers but I don't want the hanger to compete with the C Record goodness. SteveInSlo had a good idea I may attempt using heavy pound fishing line attached to the rafters after going through a pin hole in the ceiling. Hoping that would make the bike look like it is floating. Anyone hung a bike by fishing line?

If I were to go that route I would use a thin stainless steel wire, not Nylon.

Kind of a cool look, but $130 landed for that seems sky high, and a hard sell. I (and many others) could make something like that in 20-30 minutes from scrap I have in my shop.

vintage or not, hanging a bike in the house is not my thing.

BUT, if it was, I would choose this

It's super tough and very thin.

Malin makes a variety of stainless leader wire. You just need to know how to make a haywire twist.
FWIW Spiderwire is a biatch to tie as it is very slippery. You need to super glue the knot.

Yes that's what I would do too if I had a basic workshop! Feel free to steal the idea :D It's true it's a bit expensive.

OK so you mean the bike's gonna be hung permanently? Someone I know in Belgium has done this, I'm guessing with fishing line or very thin wire.

The hangers require alignment to get the front wheels to hang straight (gravity, not just a good idea, it's the law). It took me a little while to figure it out but they're straight now.

it's certainly not the most clever, stylish, or "pretty" way to do it, but Home Depot, Lowes & Harbor Freight all sell basic bike hangers (I think the ones I've bought at Lowes actually hold two bikes each)...I can attest to the fact they work & do so with not-particularly-lightweight bikes at that...but no one will look at your wall mounting and be impressed with your sense of style & taste.

I have something like this in my living room. The only issue is the tires touching my white walls (inevitable when the front wheel turns), so I'm planning on putting a shallow low counter with a rubber bumper on the front. It looks great....lots of positive comments from visitors.

I have tried this but have been unsuccessful fitting the stem into the steel tube. A standard quill stem will not fit into a 3/4" galvanized steel tube and a 1" size is far too big. I have sanded down both the stem and the inside of the pipe to no avail. I love the idea of the rack though.

Maybe I should try a small sized quill stem then a 22.2 (I think that is the size).

A local bike shop does this.

Its a different look.

one j hook into a wall and the hub below the attach point. The weight of the bike is almost all on the hook. As recall the support around the handlebar didn't seem to do much other than hold the bars straight. You may be able to accomplish this with fishing line. I would probably find some way to cup the wheel where it hits the wall to prevent swaying.

http://parksidebikes.com/ (pictures scroll thtrough it) I could go there and take some better pictures if you want?)

Do you have the side view of this? I'm wondering how you heck the bikes are independant and overlaping at the same time?

I would think the stem bolt would expand to make a snug fit inside the larger pipe? If not, you might try drilling a hole in the pipe and using a set screw to hold the stem securely.

Another option would be to repurpose one inch threadless stems?

there's lots of available 3 bike racks. A DIY option might be handlebars used with a leaning wood post? The spacing would need to be worked out but I could envision threading bars through a hole in the post at different heights with the bikes hanging behind a post attached to the wall...

You inspired me and I have plenty of time on hand these days so I made this. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic. It's basically the shape of a drawer, reinforced in the corners with pieces of 1.5x1.5 and half moon slots filed on the top to secure the top tube of the frame - all made with hand tools as I don't have a workshop/garage :)

The hardest part was to get the *&?%?%$ screws hold in the concrete wall. Several attempts and some frustration later:
