View Full Version : Question about Ultegra finish?

I've been looking at Ultegra groups, and am finding them in both the traditional silver/alloy finish and a "new" dark grey finish. Many sites say "choose between the silver and the new dark grey" but then provide no way that I can see to specify which color you want. We are talking about the 6700 group, new.

Anyone have any insight on this? How do I know I'd be getting the silver?

For the visual, here's the difference.

I've had 6700 stuff in both the silver and dark grey. I much prefer the dark grey. To my eyes the silver has a very slight green tint to it, unpleasant.

stick it on a frame that has green accents...

Hmmmm, I have an older ultegra group on my current bike, and thought the silver would go well with a white paint job. I think for any other color frame, I'd go with the dark grey. I'll have to go investigate the silver in person, as every new bike I've seen with ultegra has the dark grey.

thanks for the tip, might have saved me a lot of regret.

the new dark grey finish is nice. looks kinda similar to my ultegra 6600 sl. the new stuff is darker, actually.

the light silver 6700 is ok looking, i'd prefer they just went all the way and made it a brighter polish like dura ace 7800. even better make an all silver brightly polished 7900!

i bought a 6700 grouppo when it first came out. dark grey, i didn't have a choice (at thetimeonly available in dark grey). wish i had waited. dark grey just doesn't work for me. i much prefer silver.

I too am very picky about such things - I believe the silver group is just 6700 and, the grey group is called 6700G. Hope this helps.

At least they didn't make it black like 105. Although I wouldn't have complained if they had made it an SL version like 6600.

The SL finish/color is nice, till it chips. I've got a couple of little nicks on a few parts, although it's held up really, really well all things considered. That's why I prefer silver for anodized parts (longevity).

Slidey is right the model code on a retail box shows 6700g for "glossy grey".

The glossy grey is pretty dark almost black. I got a full retail kit recently and I opened it up to look at it briefly but I got no wow impression. DA 7900 looks better IMO with the dual tones...

I mainly meant the improvements in 6600 SL instead of the color or process they used. That said, I really like the normal grey 6700 and think it rides quite nicely.
