View Full Version : Thoughts on seat tube painting?

Soliciting thoughts on how a seat tube should be painted.

Here are some basic themes, no text, some text, just logo... I'm sure there are others, just curious what people think. Feel free to post more pictures. I also think I've seen a bike where the rear of the seat tube has the builder's name, so it is facing the rear wheel. Also, what're your thoughts on putting the name or logo on left and ride side, vs. one logo facing either front or rear?

I like a single centered logo best, perhaps with other decals or accent paint.
When I had my Strong repainted I had a single "hammerman" put on the seat tube, which nicely accompanies Carl's "custom blend" decal.

The Hampsten nails it.

Do you have a pic of that Strong? I'd be interested in seeing it.

I'm not crazy about this pic, but here's my 1200. Seat & head tube are silver, with only the barest Waterford logo.

I was just thinking about a very similar question this evening. I love it when the post, stem, and bars all match. If you were to paint the post should the stem be painted to match and if so then is that too much of the paint color? I love the Kirk with matching Ritchey Classic, though it doesn't look like the bars match.

My question is more about the seat tube, instead of the seatpost, but here's one that should get you going... (google serotta meivici pez, for more info)

It's your custom frame, not the forums. Choose a paint and decal scheme that you like and move on. You'll find no consenus here and the folks hanging around the Orford, Lyme, or Norwich General Stores don't give a sh*t about your seat tube:banana::banana:

haha, too true!! But, what if there's something out there that I might like, but have never seen before!! I've been scouring image galleries for way too long and have a pretty good idea of what I want, but I'm always willing to look at new ideas.

Yeah, I have ideas about what I like. Then I see what others have done, and I never would. Sometimes I feel like my sense of style is retarded with some of the builds I see. I am not afraid to borrow ideas from others when those ideas are better than my own.

If you want a classic style, there are a some limitations. But if it's a modern frame with oversized tubes consider placing the logo facing up on top of the down tube with the frame builders logo or single letter on the seat tube (front or rear facing) & maybe on the inside of the nds chain stay?

Some builders logos (like bishop or strong) are quite distinctive & would add some drama placed in an unexpected location. One can mock this up by printing out the logos or fonts on printer paper, cutting them out & placing them on a frame. If you wet them lightly they act like decals allowing you to experiment with different placements

Check out the galleries at Classic Rendezvous. The English were pretty creative and you might spot something which appeals to you.

I like panels with a brand on the downtube and a logo on the seat tube, though now that you mention it, I might have had logos facing front and back on the IF if I'd thought of it.

These are my last two bikes I had painted. I like white too.

Here are a few of my favs. What works depends on the vintage of the frame IMHO.

There are plenty of good ideas. I think the style/purpose of bike may make the difference.
Look at the classic rendevouz site. You can get plenty of ideas. I tend to gravitate towards the english and french.

That being said. I've always liked the Mercian barbour shop seattube.

Warning you can get lost in that site. I've also seen color combinations I've never thought would look good together but sometimes they really work.

Good Luck.
