CHATHAM (CBS) – The scientists with OCEARCH thought the first shark they caught was big, until then they hooked number 2; a 16-foot, 3500-lb. female Great White.

Scientists working in Cape Cod waters hope their first-of-its-kind research will go a long way toward solving the puzzle of these huge fish that prowl the New England coast.

It’s strictly catch, tag and release.

That’s just what the crew aboard the research ship OCEARCH did for the second time of their expedition.

“It was a tremendous cat and mouse to get the shark to bite,” says Chris Fischer, one of the expedition’s leaders.

When the cry went up, “We’re hooked up,” the battle began to move the giant fish toward a platform that could be raised after the fish swam on top of it.

After about an hour, that’s just what happened and the monster they named Mary Lee after Fischer’s mother, was caught.

“It really felt like this is one of the most historic, kind of legendary, fish we’ve ever caught, coming out of the home of Jaws,” Fischer said.....

Very interesting how you can track all 40 plus Great Whites tagged in U.S. and South African waters in virtually real time.

Keith? KEITH?!! The shark is less than 15 miles from my house!

All of Northeast Florida is freaked out (http://jacksonville.com/opinion/blog/400744/matt-soergel/2013-01-08/great-white-shark-reaches-jacksonville-beach-surf-break).

Don't go near the water? I was so scared I didn't even shower this morning. Mary Lee could be anywhere. People are forgoing toilets and relieving themselves in the bushes. My scuba equipment is in the garage so I parked the car in the driveway last night. The doorbell rang and we didn't answer it because it could have been a Candygram.

Cool. Now they need to make an App for that so people can track it on their smart phones :)

^ Didn't you think about sharks before you became a diver? The good news is in a two day period Mary Lee only came close to shore in the hours of darkness.

January 8th at 1246AM would NOT have been a good time for a moonlight swim! That's pretty awesome.

There are two Great Whites off of the Jax coast right now (Mary Lee and Genie). Both were tagged in the waters off of Cape Cod this past summer and have worked their way south.

Not sure I want to jump into the Atlantic right now....

just like most things that can kill you
the probability of a great white getting you is very very low

that's a cool website though

Jaguars new GM says he won't be.

Mary Lee is now headed back north.

Yes, true. But the probability goes up when you get in the water.

Great movie. I still think of it while splashing about in open waters.

Farewell and adue to you ladies of Spain,
For we received our orders to sail back to Boston
Never more shall we see you again."

Update:

Mary Lee is hanging between Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout. She actually entered Pamlico Sound through the outer banks. She seems to like estuaries.

Thanks for sharing this William, I missed it the first time. Very cool project. My son has an insane desire to dive with these beasts (presumptively in a cage). Reef sharks I can deal with; Tigers and Bulls in the water make me nervous, the big pelagics, particularly these beasts, I think I'll stay on the boat!

This is Laverne - a 14 ft tiger shark who sometimes visits the folks who work at Jack's Diving Locker in Kona (were my son worked last year as an instructor). She tends to raise the adrenaline levels in the water! In the second photo you can see why they are called tigers.

I can see why Laverne would raise your adrenaline! Honestly I'm fascinated by sharks as well. If I had the chance I would jump in a cage to watch them up close. I'm sure I would be scared but man I wouldn't pass that up.

What the Ocearch team is doing is amazing. Who knew Whites would come so far north this time of year?
