...i decided to non-bid on this merckx, because i already have one getting worked on and i already have a red eye-talian steel bike: 2 strikes.

and it ended up going for a song... $265...an early merckx with derosa-influenced elements, plus chrome fork and rear-triangle that are quite uncommon and what i prefer...in my size...FACK!

But having an awesome the-one-that-got-away story is priceless, really, so at the end of the day, you came out way ahead. Still, that's a nice bike.

Maybe the guy who got it for $265 was willing to bid much higher, perhaps 2 or 3x higher.

You gave that a person (perhaps a fellow forumite) a wonderful gift. OTOH maybe the seller is a forumite, and you could have given him a gift by driving the price up. :)

I'd venture to believe every single member here has had that story to tell, for me it's happend at least a dozen times. As hard as it is to belieive at the time, another one always come around again, eventually.
