I have a project that I'm working on and finding an appropriate bartape is proving harder than I anticipated...anyone have any suggestions?

This is what I'm going for:

I know that I can get it pre-mounted on bars - has anyone tried getting it on and off before?

Buy some leather, an awl, and some carpet needle and stitching?

Here it is in natural:

Here's Toshi in gray:

Here's VO:

In any case, buy one of these as a template, get some white tanned leather, crack a couple beers and bob's your uncle.

Apparently VO used to offer it in white. Here's a sad, boring story about it:

The sew on part is easy to make. VO gives you the specs for that on their site. I've duplicated a few sets of their city wraps in about 15 minutes. Very simple.

The problem comes with white leather. It is very difficult to manufacture and assure adequate durability. I don't offer it in saddles and, IIRC, Ray suggests against it for bar tape because of some prior delamination issues.

Have you (or has anyone) bought and used this wrap? It looks really nice.

PERFECT! That couldn't be a more exact match with what I want.

And the paceline gang comes through again!

That website looks like it was last updated in 2008. Hopefully he's still around and you can get what you want. If he's there, I need to drop him an email as well.

VeloOrange does something similar
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/leather-goods-handlebar-grips/elkhide-sewn-on-bar-covers.html

You should contact Ray at Handlebra. He does great things with leather and stitching. He is also a big contributor to this forum and one of the "good guys".

The VO doesn't come in white otherwise I'd go that route.

This seems outside of rays scope - I've bought from him before actually.

I have some of the (now discontinued) VO bar leather in white, new and unused. You'll have to supply the waxed thread and necessary needles. Yours for postage.

Let me know via e-mail: davetspokane1@comcast.net

THANK YOU for this website link. This will be perfect for an upcoming project I've got.

What's the deal with Carnevale bikes on that website? Is that as in Ralph (from so cal)? If so, good grief that's a name i haven't heard in probably 20+ years. Wow.

Pal of mine has an old Pogliaghi sitting unceremoniously in garage from Ralph's shop back in the day.

[edit: you gotta be f'ing kidding me, i read the website and that is indeed Ralph. I gotta tell my pal about this. Holy &^%!#$!!! Thanks again.]

Tandy Leather will have sewing needles and waxed cotton thread. You can probably get it all for <$8.
