It's not so much a "winter" bike as it is my Crappy Weather bike. Also my commuter one or two days a week year round.

Nice. I'm having trouble uploading pics of my cross bike with fenders and Bar Mitts....I was toasty today...Bar Mitts, Giro Factor ski helmet, Sidi winter boots and PI Wxb booties...the wind chill felt like it was 20 deg, or less.

I have two rain bikes, a LOOK KG381i with crud racer fenders and this fillet brazed CX frame made by Jeff Lyon as a team frame. When the CX season ends, off comes the little CX sized chain ring and on goes a 50T ring, full fenders & 28c gatorskins.

This winter I am running a 50x17 (76 gear inches) and finding I can get up all but the steepest of climbs with a little determination. This bike is way more fun than the LOOK!

Maybe 10" of fresh powder on top of 2-3' of snow. It is way more fun if the snow has a bit of pack to it. It is really fun to ride! I haven't been on my snowshoes once since picking it up.

Cannondale Synapse SL - This was my first dip into a carbon frame, as I am a steel lover at heart.
I have been VERY impressed by the ride quality of Cannondale. My recommendation for best value for the $!

I probably need to swap out the Mavic SSC brakes with something that can get grungy and not make me care.

This will live up at our cabin near Ely, MN.

Likely Mark.

My Croll build would be a great choice, but is coming along slowly.

I have also been offered a 2012 Ritchey Swiss Cross frameset from a close friend.

I have a new Centaur gruppo on the way and a brand new set of 2013 Fulcrum 5 cxs sitting here in a box.

Will have to wait and see how this plays out. Those new goodies would look great on the Swiss Cross.

The Fargo would be fun though. It's really a hoot on the trails nearby and would be a great choice for a "slow" gravel racer.

I alternate between two bikes for winter duties:

First, my Surly Steamroller for most days. Studded Nokian A10's come out on the icy days, otherwise it wears 32mm Panaracers. Recently had a local framebuilder (Maestro Cycles) add barrel mounts to the seatstays and fork blades to provide permanent fender mounting points.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8450226131_48a2cd845e_c.jpg

Second, my Surly Karate Monkey for the snowy days. 1x8 gearing with the pink Cascadia fenders and knobby 2.1" tires work equally well on snow covered roads and multi-use trails.

Final build of a KM frame that I recently sourced from the group.

Replaced the wagon wheel like Nokian A10s with some much more supple Continental Winter Contacts. Didn't give up much grip in the moderate white stuff typical to Cinci winters, while making pavement pedaling enjoyable.

Flashback is from both the reflective strip on the tires, as well as the microbeads in the powder coat on the black reflective Dyads. Great, subtle in normal daylight, high-viz rim option for a commuter, as long as you're running discs.

The current Karate Monkey (mine's a 2012) has barrel mounts on the seat stays, just above the disc brake. There's another pair further up the stays near the seatpost. They also included a chainstay bridge for fender mounting. Good work Surly!

Taking the rear wheel out of that thing is a serious PIA though, with rearward facing track drops and discs
This is something else that Surly fixed. I can easily remove the rear wheel without unbolting the disc caliper. Yay!

This is what I have been using. This was during a snowstorm last year. I had to stop in a tunnel and de-ice my brakes.

It's an old Raleigh M80 with pretty much everything upgraded but for the seatpost, stem, and cranks. The wheels were custom built by a friend, with Chris King 36 hole hubs laced to Sun Mammoth downhill rims, and Kenda studded tires.

not for me unfortunately... I found out I'll be putting on E-9 this coming year and there is only 1 billet on the West Coast for a Master Chief Corpsman... I'm gonna ask for it, but not sure I'll get it... but yes, I'd take the Central Coast in a second! :D

Congrats on the E-9 slot. Many aspire to get there....most don't. Great work my man!

This is my winter ride. A Surly Pugsley Neckromancer.

But this dude has a killer winter bike, a single speed that he ditches in the woods when hit hits the end of the plowed section to ski.

What's that front bag setup? Is there a rack under there?

yes there is. Its a swift ozette bag that is sitting on a Nitto Marks rack.
You can see it better here (at least what the struts are doing)
