I've had this Gios Compact for years. I bought it as a project. The top tube was rusted out. I rode it like that for a bit, but I grew up and realized I liked my face too much. I got the top tube replaced about 2 years ago by a kid in Oakland named Cleaver. It sat in my garage for 2 years, until I sent it to West Coast Powder Coater, by SFO, last month. I just picked it up and couldn't be happier.
I'm going to build it out with the crome fork, some Campagnolo Record 10 and some Mavic Ksyrium SL.
I'll upload some photos when I'm done. I was just so happy with the powder coat I wanted to show it off.

I always liked that shade of blue. I remember looking at those in the Excel catalog years ago. That will be a fun restoration project.

. . . and do you have a source for the decals?

I've seen them before on ebay for around $40, but I'm not sure I'm going to go with decals. I might leave it bare or go for a custom Gios paint on kind of look. Since the top tube is already unoriginal, I went with the cable on the outside vs the internal cable which probably caused the rust issues in the first place, i'm not too hard up about making it look original.
Do you have a source for the decals if I go that way?

You need the decals now...

Hope you have a friend that can clear coat with polyurethane.

The nice about that model is that came in other colors aswell not the hard to match blue one.

This model always got my attention because of the adjustable drop outs, easy to change geometry stuff. I believe some looks came with something similar??

Post pictures when you are done :)

I was sponsored by Gios in 1986-1987. I should have never sold that bike. Good luck with your resto.

I got a great set of Gios decals from Excel in Boulder a few years ago- look up their website- I bet they still have them.

Do the rear drop outs bolt on?

Yeah; the rear dropouts bolt on and have several slots in them for the mounting screws. You can adjust the chainstay length by loosening the screws and moving them back and forth.

Nice. How tall are you? That's a big frame and long stem.

It's 62x58 with a 120mm stem.

I really dig that blue! Campy record 10 is also the best group I've ever ridden IMO. Have fun with her! :)

Did you apply Framesaver or some equivalent before you assembled the bike? I see quite a few of the Gios bikes here in Boulder and I always think they look good. Good riding.

I'd peel the stickers of those wheel as they detract from the sweetness of the bike ATMO.

I would peal the stickers off too. Other than that, it is right on target.

The Easton graphics are under clear. I'm putting mavic ksyrium sl on it, these were just in the garage when I was throwing the group on...
And yes I framesavered it.

Huh, I don't think I've ever seen clear over decals on alloy rims. I can scratch those off my wheelset short list.

Here is a picture of my Gios Compact with the traditional Mavic GL330 wheels & 9 speed shimano group. Powder coat is a non-traditional sparkle orange. I love this frame.

They're carbon with alloy break surface.

Nice. Being an SF Giants fan I almost went orange, then I was for sure going white, but at the powder coaters shop I decided to go with as close as I could to Gios blue...

Just out of curiosity, how much did they charge for the powder job?

It looks really nice.

$100 out the door.
As always the project has hidden cost, hidden in I did think about them when I decided to do it. But it's been a fun project.
I paid $350 for the complete bike with a rusted out top tube. I sold the campy group that was on it for $250.

$100 for the rusted frame.
$125 for new top tube
$100 for powder
$70 for face/chase, over all thread clean up and to spread the back end to 130mm.

So I'm close to $400 in total cost for the restored frame, and I haven't bought decals yet. It might be about $100-$150 more than I could have found a decent Gios, or around the same price I could have bought a more prestigious frame, but it's been a fun project that I've strung out for 6 years now.
