A question for Garmin/STRAVA users...

I'm looking to get away from using the STRAVA iPhone app to log my rides, but I don't really want/need fancy computer map stuff on my ride. What's the lowest end Garmin I can use to log my ride stats and upload to my STRAVA account? Also is there any difference in GPS reliability across the different models, as I often find myself riding in places where the GPS signal would drop when using the iPhone/STRAVA app?

Thanks in advance!

the edge 200.. no difference in the receiver to the best of my knowledge, less customization, less metrics, no ant+ add ons (so no HRM or Cadence)

Google "strava compatible" and go to first link. That lists it all out. I'm on my edevice or I would cut and paste it here.

My buddy uses a Garmin watch for both running and cycling. If you were looking for a single device for both those uses, I'd look at a watch GPS.

Edit: Not sure about GPS accuracy, but the watch has a smaller battery, and thus a shorter battery life.

Interesting. Any idea what the battery life is? I'd generally need atleast 5-6 hours, sometimes more. And from the watch you can upload rides to STRAVA?

Yeah, I'll ask him the next time I see him. I know he did a century with it. I don't think you could expect much more than that.

I know he uploads to strava, he may upload the file to the computer first, and then upload the file to strava.

I should see him later this week, and I'll pm you details.

Cool, I'd appreciate it. Ill spend some time on the Garmin site too, but I always like asking here first.

Cheers, all!

I got this as a new phone a month or so back and I was surprised to see that it comes with barometer assisted GPS. Elevation accuracy seems much better than my one iPhone.

Im using the Edge 200, simple to use. If you want cadence and heart beat you'll have to move up to the 500

From a full charge, I've used a Garmin 110 for four hours no problem. May have been able to go longer, but that's what I got out of it, fresh out of an overnight charge. On Strava, the Garmin 110 (watch) doesn't automatically dictate the activity type; you have to change it in the dropdown button. My Strava activities seem to default as rides, but can easily be changed to whatever they actually were when saving the activity to the Log. I have also uploaded rides from the watch with no problem. Hope this helps.

The Forerunner series work well across the board and you can get a bike mount that allows very secure usage of the watch band. As far as a cycling edge series go you can throw it in pocket for skiing or hiking. I would wait for the replacement for the five hundred edge or get an old three o five forerunner unless you really want full maps and a touch screen.

From what I hear the 200 is the most accurate of the bunch but then if you're chasing Strava glory you might want some more fudge in your metrics ;). the 200 seems like the good budget way to get better accuracy and save your phone for things it's better suited to.

Ha, that's funny. Nope, no interest in "STRAVA glory"... I just like keeping track of miles and elevation. I don't mind using my phone, but it drops the GPS signal pretty often where I ride. I'm definitely interested in accuracy, so if you're sources are correct, the 200 seems like the way to go.

They are coming out with a new Edge this Spring if you are willing to wait. Should have as good or better accuracy as the two hundred. By far phones are the most liberal with elevation and other metrics. It isn't even a fair game

There are some good gps discussions over at mtbr: http://forums.mtbr.com/gps-hrm-bike-computer/

Seems like the possible drawbacks of the Edge 200 are lack of barometric altimeter and no control over the gps sample rate, vs Edge 500 and 800.

If you use your iPhone Strava app, try disabling 3G and WiFi. I read that they can drastically mess up the accuracy of the GPS signal

Go ahead. I could care less about that leaderboard stuff.

i have both a 200 and an 800. unless i need the maps, i just grab the 200 and go. it's a wonderful device IMO.

I was looking at some Strava segments and routes in my area, and it appears that Strava reports the "elevation" for a route by summing the climb and descent elevations. So the elevation total ends up being double what it would be for just the climbing.

Is that what's happening or am I misunderstanding something?
