View Full Version : Aesthetics: Black frame - black wheels?

Alright so I've sourced an 80's Italian frame (SL, Cinelli fittings and Columbus dropouts) and am going to be painting it black. What is the popular opinion on all black wheels? I'm having trouble picturing how good or bad it would look with skinwall tires (maybe I should run black). I have a silver wheelset that I'll probably run but it's uniglide.

I got a set of the new Bontrager rxl road tubeless wheels and now for 2013 they are black decals on all black wheels. When I got them I immediatelywanted to powder coat my frame black. I love the black on black everything look.

Johnny Cash. That is all.

What components do you plan to use? If the group is silver, I would consider black hubs and rims with silver spokes.

Some, but not all vintage bikes can pull off all black wheels.

As far as skinwalls on all black wheels, I am for them:

My old HED TT bike was all black everything possible and looked really cool

I recently had my 88 Appel painted black and built it with a modern group with black wheels. Pics are bad, but I really liked the way it turned out. I'm probably going to have the fork painted to match the frame over the winter.

No skinwalls! Black wheels look great on a black frame.

I doubt you could go wrong with all-black. As someone said - Johnny Cash! :hello:

No, not on a classic bicycle. Sorry. It will look "cheap" not "stealth."

Black box section rims look good on old bikes. I like these TB 14 rims

I'm not usually a monochromatic kind of guy, but this has held up rather well:

I hate to disagree withe everyone else but I don't think black on black does it for me! A reason I asked for pics. I'd love to use my modern wheels but I think I'm gonna have to track down a set of silver Shimano hubs on OPs or something. Box section looks so much better with silver hubs.

Might even change my paint color as I've got an entirely 600 Tricolor group (seatpost, HS, and stem to boot). Almond might be nice, beige tires - yum.

I like where this is headed. Tricolor should complement that well.

Really not enough info here. Group color is going to be a factor.

I don't like where you are heading though.

Stien, I agree that the gum sidewalls are the way to go. That would look pretty BA on a classic bike like you have. Get something like Veloflex Roubaix tires and tear the roads up.

Bottom line is, no matter what you do there will be someone who will question or think you should have made a different choice.

I would go all silver on the wheelset. I've got silver TB-14s on my mostly black crosscheck and I think it looks good. :)

I'm going to do another Guinness bike over the winter- '87 Circuit with 7 speed DA 7400.

Absolutely stunning. I'm loving it, but I decided to go a bit over the top with my paint.

Here is the album with pics (http://s660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/cleverbastid/Mystery%20Bike%20Build/). I know it's a polarizing concept. Frame is still in process.

Stien,

You were playing with us all along weren't you? No one who painted a frame like you did would be considering black on black.

Did you just rattle or powdercoat can the frame/fork? And then hand paint the details over it? did you clearcoat over the handpainting?

Rattle epoxy paint, then nail polish, then everything got clear.

so like, the stuff (http://www.amazon.com/Krylon-3201-Appliance-Epoxy-Finish/dp/B001HWCL8Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1402075869&sr=8-6&keywords=spray+paint+epoxy) you use to paint a refrigerator?

rad

i was thinking about powdercoating 2 frames i've got because i've had mediocre success with spray paint touchups in the past. would you recommend for/against doing this? obviously not necessarily for show quality. more so for durability and cost effectiveness

Yeah pretty much it. You'll save a lot over powder coat and it looks pretty darn good if you prep it and do multiple coats. Only durability issues I've had are at the dropouts. And I built this bike like 6x since I painted it.

I like B-on-B, but it get gets boring sometimes. I like color bling as long as it black or silver, but a bit of silver goes a long, long way.
