I just really wish he had also kept track of how many people have stopped to actually help the turtle across the road.

I've rescued a bunch of turtles over the years, most often while riding. My wife and I rescued this little guy last summer while on a tandem ride. He was trying to cross the road adjacent to a truck terminal. Robyn wrapped him in a bandana and he fit nicely in my center jersey pocket. We wished him bon voyage at a local lake about a mile down the road.

I've done this from my car but never on a ride. I did find a snapper one time on the center line while on a ride, but he was large enough I didn't want to take the risk of moving in for the move.

As for the A**holes who deliberately run over them, there is a special place in Heck reserved for them . . .

I'd estimate 1-2 times a month on the River loop by Vischer's ferry. The last one was a massive Snapping Turtle.

You're supposed to be hanging out with your wife tonight! Get back to it!

A few years ago my mother and sister were visiting so we were doing touristy-type stuff. One of the high-points was the Cahokia Mounds (http://www.cahokiamounds.org/) just over the river in IL.

It was drizzling, but we walked to the top of Monks Mound (the largest man-made earthen mound in N America). On the way back down I noticed a turtle at the side of the road, right about where the car is in the pic below. It turned out to be a snapper, and s/he was full of energy and none too happy. I decided that that was way too close to the road for comfort, so we got the car, put the turtle in the trunk (without loosing any digits) and drove it over to a lake / swampy area near the Visitor's Center. I released him/her near the water and s/he swam off as if s/he was used to being ferried about in cars all the time.
