My wife (not a 'dog person') suggested we make a trip
To the local humane society yesterday
In order to pick out a Christmas present!
I have always wanted a four legged trail partner
...the bigger, the better...
(To join our Boston terrier who is ten years old)
This beautiful red Doberman (--Katy--)
http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/24683924
Picked me yesterday!
Third dog into the interview process
And she nuzzled my shoulder then jumped in the car and came home.
My wife is in love...she is the perfect walking companion
And can ski and bike like no other on lead!
I took her on the full ski loop yesterday
And she was perfect...stayed on my elbow
No matter what the tempo!
Today we blasted down the lake on the moonlander!
Perfect!
She is a two year old runaway
That has run away with our hearts!
Hope your holiday season
Is filled with a similar joy!

Beautiful dog, Spidey. Also, I hope you won't mind my asking, is there a reason you write your comments in what looks like verse? I mean, I like it, but I'm curious if there's a backstory there, or if it's just a matter aesthetics.

Her story is coming together...
She has a significant limp
Which we noticed straight away
But it seemed
Worse in the morning or after long naps.
I was concerned about having injured her
With all of the activity...
Turns out she has a one year old fractured talus
That is so arthritic the joint is semi-fused...
The vet recommended as much activity
As possible and was very glad to hear
About our long training walks
Bike rides on the lake
And cross country skiing adventures!
She has no limp whatsoever
With activity...
With my surgery a year ago...
And her fracture at roughly the same time
It seems our paths to recovery
Have intersected at just the right time!

Good score, spidey! My pup's rescue too. She doesn't really do the leash thing while I'm on a bike though, so most our adventures aren't strictly legal. She's learned to duck behind me when she sees oncomers though.

Took a nice long walk this morning--
Decided to give it to the end of the driveway
To get the paper...
There was no turning back at that point--
--too much fresh scent for Katy to resist going on
And she forgot about her shoes!
The jacket works well, too.
On the third try the boots are successful!
She couldn't walk without stumbling
On the first two attempts.

If she hears me putting on my snow gear...she's up and ready to go!
Most of what I've read about dobermans is that they're wimps in cold weather...
Katy continues to amaze me. We were skirting some open water
And being very cautious. Out of what seemed like curiosity she put a paw
In, tested the water and then -- you guessed it -- She just jumped right in...
...I had to help her up the ice bank to get out. At 28 degrees and with the polar plunge as an okoboji winter games speciality....

I've never seen a dog I didn't like but these are all extraordinary. It is so great when dogs are paired together.

We lost our Lhasa Toby last Christmas eight years after his rescue from the shelter.

He was my wife's dog that I walked, fed, and cared for, was often my car riding companion to the trails.

We are on hold for a replacement until the cat herd (four) thins.

This thread makes my day.

This is my pup, Sallie. We rescued her 3 years ago. At that time, she was afraid of being hit, fear aggressive with other dogs and was terrified of being outside on a line. It took her almost a year to understand that touch could be about affection and now regularly snuggles up to us. She is still fear aggressive, but will now walk alongside a few dogs and is pretty easily managed on walks because she turns towards us and gets treats when she sees scary (all of them to her) dogs.

She can also now relax outside on a line that lets her run around our entire yard because she trusts us not to leave her out there for days on end. We believe she was staked in a yard and left in general due to her first reactions to seeing an outdoor lead and because her teeth show damage that would have come from chewing on a chain.

She also came to us just having gotten over mange, having erlichia (the dog equivalent of aids), lyme disease and antiplasty (no idea how to spell some of these) and so has been sick for a good portion of her life with us. She's now fully healthy and it's nice to see her personality really shine through.

She's been a lot of work, but is totally worth it as she's my buddy.

This is my new girl Molly. She is 10 months old and I adopted her the beginning of Dec. The gentleman whom I adopted her from had her crated all day and all night and he realized he had made a mistake in getting her. He also only had an apartment and this dog needs a little elbow room to run and play. She also lacked pretty much all house manners, but luckily she is coming around and she is a sweet heart. My other dog Maggie (German Shepherd mix) and Molly get along really well together and Molly is great with the kids.

She is a great dog, but the Brittany seems a little more touchy than the GS breads and the Chow I have had before. More sensitive, so I need to practice a different style for her. She connects on a different level then the other dogs I have had.

She is a real sweetheart. After two week interruption due to her being spayed (which was a long two weeks), she has settled down and our routine has been re-established. I also have learned what she needs a little better. Maggie and my prior dog Yukon were good with us playing the the backyard and affection around the house. For Molly, if she gets a 20 min walk each day, preferably in the morning, her behavior is quite a bit different. She also was never taught manners at her prior house so she is learning boundaries. Little things like standing on our kitchen table are just not acceptable. :D

She has taken to our other dog Maggie well as you can see from the photos above. She is also quite fond of our children. My son, in the photo above, and Molly stole a quick nap while while we were moving furniture in our house. My daughter Ava (6) has quite a affection for Molly and they have a really bond brewing. My daughter loves taking photos and videos of her. She even taught her to climb the slide so she can come into her playhouse.

It is quite the transition going from a 15 year old dog (he passed in Nov) to having an 8 month old pup, be we have adjusted and so has she. She has a great heart, great nature, once her manners catch up we will be good. She is in basic obedience training now, but I am also working on fetch with her which she seems to enjoy. She also loves going running with me, so it is cool to be able to connect with her like that.

I love having dogs, the are just a blast, but obviously a labor of love. You also only get out what you put into it.

Paul

Gendo,

Olive looks gorgeous. I have a golden retriever/poodle cross (called Pino) who looks quite a lot like Olive. In Australia we call that cross a "Groodle", a better name, I think than the "Goldendoodle", which I have heard is the name used in the US.

What is Olive?

Fx2,

You guessed correct! Olive is our Goldendoodle, errrr, Groodle! I have to admit to feeling a little emasculated every time I say Goldendoodle. Maybe I'll go with Groodle from here on out.

As I'm sure you well know, these dogs have massive amounts of energy and love too. Give my best to Pino!

This punk's name is Dante. We brought him home at 8 weeks, and he is now 9 months old. Despite his cute and cuddly looks, he makes Marley of "Marley & Me" fame look docile and good mannered. He is literally tearing apart (obliterating is a better adjective) our wood fencing in the dog run we have for him. We almost gave him to my wife's friend this past Friday but my sons started to cry, so Dante got a reprieve.

He's getting neutered on Wednesday, so he can literally kiss his nuts goodbye. Hopefully, that will mellow him out.

It worked for our puppy, good luck, be patient, it was worth it for us.

Our daughter just started laughing on our walk today...thinking how much our two dogs act like the Star Wars characters Yoda and Jar-Jar! I think the name changes may stick...

Mike--I am thinking your post should clear you
For full participation on the forum...maybe a post
On this thread should be required. Pet owners
Seem to be better tempered responders
...or maybe that's just another of my impressions
That just happens to be
True + true = unrelated

Beautiful dog--now let's see a shot of a bike!

Gus a Newfoundland/Pyrenees mix and Lucia. If there is a better dog around kids, I haven't seen it. The proportions are off in this photo Gus is 5x Lucia's size.

There have been some beautiful dogs on this post. I especially enjoyed the one of the kid on the newfoundland. Here's my pooch. Only took 6 years from getting her from a rescue until she was comfortable enough to let me get a picture like this.

Awwww. So cute.

The fact that little guys like that needed to be rescued says a lot about the world we live in, and none of it good.

This is Gia. We adopted her from a local vet. She was not expected to live past one year, but is quite well at three years, 16 pounds. VERY smart. Thinks she is one of the kids. Great family dog.

Couldn't leave out Maggie, recently departed just shy of her fourteenth birthday. Rescued at one, was a major part of our lives. Great friend.

Going to get a new puppy in a few weeks. I have a 10 year old Siberian Husky and, this time, I am going with a Belgian Sheepdog. Here they are at about 5 weeks. Not sure which will be mine at this point.

Hanging out with #3 yesterday; a Vizsla we adopted from some friends who moved abroad. 40 pounds of purebred crazy. Still having trouble admitting she's a dog, but we're working on it.

within hours of picking her up from the boarding kennel
katy breathed her last.
i had a friend encourage me to adopt/rescue another doberman.
he has been a great trail partner thusfar.
...rough around the edges, underweight and a training challenge...
6 weeks into it
we're both really glad to have found each other.
i'm thankful for Truman this Thanksgiving
and ever more thankful for the time i had with Katy...

She lived to a few years ago at 16.5 yo. Here she is in 1995 on the Big Island.

Thats the lava flow from the 1984 Mauna Loa eruption, that threatened the City of Hilo, at the same period Kilauea had already started. Still mostly only lichens growing--can't recall clearly but there might have also been some small ferns.
