I posted to the "Free Bicycling Magazine" thread, but didn't get any responses. It seems that most folks who posted trashed Bicycling Magazine. I don't think it is that bad (except for the stupid sex issue) although there isn't a lot of meat and I am sure there is some bias. But my question is: what are some good magazines out there for cycling? I subscribe to VeloNews, which I know some have also trashed. I don't care to follow national/international/cross/road/MBX that closely. I would like more riding tips and training help.

Any suggestions?

Vintage Bicycle Quarterly is my favorite, not so much for the old stuff as for the new. Very interesting articles on front end geometry, gearing, tires, wheel size, etc.

Note this magazine is likely to be of interest to the randonneuring crowd, or the Rivendell/Bridgestone/iBob folks more than racing types, although there have been some really interesting articles and photos of old races--nice pix of Paris-Roubaix in 1935 in the most recent issue!

I also truly enjoy the Rivendell Reader. My first issue had "A Cycling Quarterly for the Disenfranchised" right under the title. There's a wonderful whimsical, innocent quality to the whole magazine. Warning: racer types will feel discrimated against when reading this!

For more general readership, the issue of Asphalt I saw looked good. But they haven't done a new issue in a year or more (others on the board might know more).

I have always thought that both ProCycling and CycleSport do a good job. I also have an awesome issue of Cycling Pro here...but you have to know Italian to read that one!

VBQ is great and VeloVision is very good. The Rivendell Reader used to be quite good and informative, but I feel it's really gone downhill in the last two years.

ProCycling and Cycle Plus are good magazines.

The new magazine "ROAD" is very good.

It's a little different take on things, but I like it... Cyclesport and Procycling are nearly the same (not a bad thing). I also like Ride (from Aus) but it costs too damn much...

I agree with "Road" magazine. Large size like Velonews but higher quality paper. Most people have never heard of it though.

I would second Cycling Plus. It's a British magazine so it costs more, but it blows away Bicycling. Reviews are much more in depth, and if you ever travel to England, they have great routes to try each month.

I've heard a little bit about Road, but have not seen it anywhere. Any more info on it? A website perhaps?

Newsprint is dead.

Not really dead it is just sad to read the LAME magazines. At least we can get (more) candid content from folks such as Pez, blogs etc.

Germany's Tour. Probably the best out there.

France's Le Cycle

For those that can't read another language, Velonews isn't bad or one of the weekly rags (name?) from the UK is pretty good.

On the web, cyclingnews.com. They have a fitter that contributes that other fitter's need to learn from and treat as a god. Good training tips too.

I have seen it at my local Barnes and Noble. Also, if you happen to be in the Boulder area (!), I have seen it at the CU bookstore. I agree that this looks like a worthwhile read.

Their "Daily Distractions" are one of the best for training...always make you wanna ride more...

IMO the best bicycling magazine out there right now is Vintage BIcycle Quarterly.

The day Bicycle Guide went down was the beginning of the end. There was another, RoadBike I think, but it did not last. These new magazines lack quality writers who have wit, insight, wisdom. They are like cheapie alu frames made in taiwan compared to high quality custom.

For pictures, feature articles and bike tests - Ride

For interviews with current pro's and insight into the Euro race scene, and bike reviews written by Chris Boardman in gibberish - Procycling

For a guaranteed all round good read and with a nod to the heroes of the past - Cycle Sport

For crappy paper, poor editing, and bike tests so bad they make me want to take up darts - Road

And what exactly am I supposed to do while sitting on the throne? I don't call it "the library" for nothing.

Good bike magazines or good bike porn? Lots of glossy pictures of guys on sexy bikes with shaved legs - I'd call it bike porn. There's no replacement for riding...

What do you do when you're on the throne? Work on your aerodynamic position!!!

I'm big on analytical numbers and figures and like research and testing so I'm voting for Tour magazine. You feel more intelligent trying to read German too!

I've cancelled Velonews and Bicycling subscriptions. Regularly read Ride and always pick up Road and Procycling (but put them back as they cost big $ down here!). Chris Boardman's bike reviews (as well as Robert Miller's) are very enjoyable.
