View Full Version : Christmas Songs . . .

I went to spin class last night--first one of the winter. Yuck.

Anyway, it turned out to be this particular instructor's "Christmas Song Workout" and while I pedaled to nowhere I got to listen to Maria Cary belt out "All I Want For Christmas is You" for about the 4th time in one day. But she also played a decent number of Christmas-oriented songs I'd never heard before, including one playful little ditty titled "Who spiked the eggnog" . . .

Here's my choices for faves . . . What are yours?

Christmas Carol: Silent Night

Christmas-oriented song: The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting . . . ) sung by Nat King Cole. The original. The BEST.

One I wait for on the radio and yell "YESSS!" when they finally play it: Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARq6uYSsUq0

One I love to hear once a year---ONCE:Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey!

Thanks to the beginning of "Christmas" on Oct. 15, I HATE all Christmas songs and cannot listen to even one of them without cringing, rage and flight.

Now we are getting somewhere.

I was fortunate to see Sedaris do a reading about a month ago - what a fun evening.

I don't love it but I can't get it out of my brain: Bing Crosby singing "The Hawaiian Xmas Song"--------

Often overlooked carol: "Once in Royal David's City".

Carla Bley's "Carla's Christmas Carols". A brass quintet plus piano and bass play traditional Christmas carols. But the arrangements are so stunningly beautiful that I listed to this all year round. The tinge of gospel on 'O Holy Night" is magnificent. Warm and subtle. Jazz lovers will marvel at the harmony and details, while civilians won't be put off :)

One of my favorite Christmas collections is "Come Darkness, Come Light" by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It's a lovely collection of original and not-often-heard Christmas and seasonal songs:

One of her original tracks:

And I always have to add to any Xmas list Springsteen's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town":

Brian Setzer Orchestra doing Jingle Bells.

Really, the "Jingle All the Way" soundtrack is a must for serious Christmas-music collectors like myself. Yes, you've found my weakness. 52 CD's and counting...

For traditional, give me What are You Doing Christmas Eve? Lots of folks recorded it. My fave is REALLY old school: Billy Eckstine.

Cool thread. Thx BBD!

Bark Bark Bark

Bark Bark WOOF WOOF Bark

Seriously though, there are lots of good songs here. I am especially fond of Nat King Cole and Alvin and the Chipmunks.

OTOH, I used to really like the Bing/Deano/Rat Pack songs until I realized that most of that 'cute' banter was probably done then they were boozed up.
My least favorites are anything being played/sung by multiple superstars in an artificial supergroup while being filmed on a soundstage. Think "We Are the World" type thing.

In addition the the classics (Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Vince Guaraldi, etc.) and certain to be classics (Diana Krall, etc.), I'll find myself getting multiple variations of the same song. The latest is "I'll Be Home for Christmas" (there must be over 1,500 versions in iTunes). Something a little different I discovered that way years ago was Stevan Pasero's version of the Nutcracker Suite for the guitar (in particular the overture and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies"):

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/nutcracker-suite-for-guitar/id310624173

Also, Sarah Morgann's version of "Once Upon a December:"

After that class I concur. At least with the playlist she had for the WHOLE class time. Never had this instructor before. I got to the gym a bit earlier than I thought I would and when I checked in I realized I could still make the 5pm class--otherwise it's wait till 6:30. So I ran like a mofo and got in there just as she turned off the lights. Got on the bike, clipped in--and she started the music and I looked up and realized she was wearing reindeer antlers . . . Uh-oh.

When I was an instructor I gave them a kind, gentle Christmas INTRO so they'd think the worst, then switched CD's into this . . .

BWA-HA-HA-HA!

I like "Mary Did You Know" by either Mark Lowery or Trent DeWhite. Don't particularly like the versions by all the country western singers. Everyone seems to have recorded it.

I'm not religious, and don't actually think this event happened. Just think this song captures the spirit and tradition of Christmas....and I really like the music and the lyrics.
