Looks like you could knock your teeth out trying to get in the drops.

Yea, I don't get the semi-moustache bars with knobby tires thing... The frame is Ibis, but the rest of it....

I generally get annoyed at elitists who grumble about "faster backwards." But that thing is just wrong. . . .

You guys clearly don't know what you are looking at. Those are not "semi-moustache" bars, they are WTB dirt drops. That bike is designed to be ridden in the drops the entire time...

Salsa (QBP) and others these days have been designing 29er bikes with the same set up on their adventure bikes.

You might be surprised how well this bike rides.

Not the same thing as "faster backward" at all.

Piece of history.

Here's an mtbr thread:

Sorry to see the dismissals here. Drop bar MTBs work really well, as long as they are set up like that with good height on the stem. You ride in the drops almost all the time.

Exactly.

Look at photos of John Tomac, Jacqui Phelan, etc. Them's pioneers, folks.

Sorry.. Just not used to posts of this caliber on here.

My favorite:
Charlie Cunningham's 1979 bike (http://www.mtnbikehalloffame.com/page.cfm?pageid=6&memberid=25)

There is some amazing Sonoma/Marin originalness going on there.

I think it's fantastic. There used be more 'dirt drops' on the scene. As others mentioned, Cunningham, et. al. rode similar setups.

Can't see 'em. Are they down by the chainstay?

Cool bike. It's not worth that much IMO but I definitely would ride it like it is. Can't see 'em. Are they down by the chainstay?Yes....it has a rollercam on the chainstay.

I owned/rode an ibis that was very similar to that one. Mine was an earlier vintage (circa 1985)--serial #95. Wonder if Wes Williams built the one on eBay. Asking price is high, either way, though.

exactly...this was one of THE bikes back in those days. it even has the hite-rite, shark fin and portage strap. worth every dollar for those who care due to vintage and pedigree. backj then I couldnt afford one, so I ended up with a taiwan built fisher. still, an ungodly $700 back then.

it looks this way because well, bikes back then sometimes look this way.

as opposed to some of the bikes we see here, which look that way becasue the owners need or want them to look that way

My comment has absolutely nothing to do with the drop bars. Drop bars on a bike designed for them = perfect.

To take a really nice vintage frame, stick a 6" (or more) high stem on it.....well to say it would handle poorly would be really kind.

Ride what you want and have fun with it.

that Ibis is 100% stock, the bar and stem are what people like Tomac rode
with drops back in the day. It doesn't handle poorly at all.

The eBay bike's setup would have been quite common for folks running drop bars at that time ('87). My ibis and Ritchey both had drop bars, and my stems had similar rise/reach. The handling on both was very good. In fact, I found that I was able to descend better with the drops than with conventional flat bars.

I rode a Yeti ARC with accutrax fork set up like that for 3 years. The only thing I hated were the suntour shifter pods (can't recall the name). Wish I still had that bike, I would put SRAM double tap levers on it and it would kill.

All you had to do was hold on and that bike descended like a champ.

yes

the hite-rite was the priimitive forerunner of todays drop posts

the shark fin, well, chainstay and chainsuck (frm the top) protector both in one

and yes, that is a roller-cam u-brake behind the BB under the CS's
