$272 for a 2 pound tub. Is it really that special, or just rare? Or maybe it's collectable.

It is just grease.

Just rare and collectible. People go nuts for sealed vintage Campy grease tubs.

I use Lucas from the local auto parts store. Works just as well, IMO.

AFAICR that's just a white lithium grease. In the humidity of Louisiana, it turns to concrete pretty quickly.
There are lots of better greases around, but if you want the real deal, that's it.

Yep, I used to sell a lot of that stuff for $10. Thick, white lithium. Bet it's pretty solid by now. Use Phil or Park grease.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm still working on a big can of Bullseye red grease that I probably bought 20 years ago.

I like it on my biscotti with my morning espresso.

I've noticed that Campy grease has evolved over the years. The old stuff in that tub appeared to be a thick white lithium grease, which can get chalky with age. The newer Campy parts I've bought come with grease that is still whiteish but more translucent - it doesn't seem to get crumbly. Don't know if it is the same stuff they sell in a tube - that is too rich for my tastes.

Phil was what we used for a long time, but in recent years I've had a tube of Moutain Dew colored Shimano (yikes!) grease that has served me well.

funny, i still have (and occasionally use) a tube of phil wood grease that's got to be at least 10 years old. the price tag was from a bike shop that was in another state i lived in at the time!

I still have one from 1987, and still use it.

Yow, I still have a couple of half filled small jars of Campy grease! It always reminded me of the Pennzoil 705 white grease that is now very hard to find:

I too have been using Phil and actually have a tube of Shimano "yellow" grease. Good Luck!

Back in the day a friend used to refer to Campy grease as "Oil of Olay."

I still have some from the '70s and it is just fine. I run across mentions of a Miche grease that is very similar, but not sure if it is still available or not.

I just rebuilt a set of wheels from my brother that had Phil grease in them. It had started to separate. Not sure if that is common or not.

I have a big tube of Miche grease that I've been using for 10 years. It seems similar to my Campy grease. Best of both worlds. Most often I use Mobil 1.

I too still have a tub of Campy grease, and it appears to be just fine. Gets oil on top when I don't use it for awhile, but a quick stir and voila! No better smell than that Campy grease!!!

I think that was Bullshot. I still have a little. Loved that stuff.

Still rocking a tub of Bullshot as well. I think I bought it back in '99...

Yes, I stand corrected, it is Bullshot. Love the texture, the color, and the smell.

I'd be happy to buy some Campy grease just for the smell. Thats a crazy prise though, maybe $25 tops.

phil grease isnt that special, despite the bike lore. common marine bearing grease, no?

the very best grease I have ever used is Dura Ace Special grease. Whatever that stuff is, it's perfect. I have a 100gram bottle and I love using it on my nicer stuff.

One task at my friend's first real job was to transfer the grease out of a Standard Oil drum into phil tubes.

"Calcium Complex Grease"

I'm concerned that's a euphemism for chicken fat.

And Calcium Complex is newer technology than lithium. Lithium still has over 50% market share overall. CaCx has more "soap" (thickener) and less oil. Very stable and little bleed (oil on top over time).

And Calcium Complex is newer technology than lithium. Is it suitable as a general purpose grease for bikes, hubs, BB's, etc? The price is certainly attractive at $15/lb, if I read that right.

Better water resistance and heat tolerance than lithium. It can get a little heavier as it ages is my only caution.

Problem with Bullshot...working on bikes, getting cut is inevitable. See a spot of red on the finger, think it's blood, lick it off...it's Bullshot.

What, you mean Phil doesn't have his own oil refinery?

Do you still carry the Miche grease oldpotatoe? Might be interested in some..
