I have been searching for the right frame for a while. I was set on using disc brakes, but am starting to accept that I don't need them... Trying to build a relatively light weight, all day comfortable bike I can ride on the dirt roads I love so much in central and western MA.

I haven't had the best experience with cantis or mini-v and I want to run at LEAST 32mm wide tires. If I can accomplish this with road calipers that would be lovely. I'm willing to give CX 8.4 a try as well.

TT can be 53.5 - 54.5

High end steel / relatively lightweight steel would be ideal. Titanium even better but probably can't afford it.

Fender and rack bosses not essential.

Are you opposed to Aluminum? I have a Crux frameset in great shape.

I am. I know it's not necessarily the material that makes the bike, but I have yet to own an aluminum bike for very long.... I keep trying them, but end up selling. I am likely not going to race this bike much, if at all, and am looking for something more like the sport touring bike of the 70s and 80s that can take fat tires and isn't a boat anchor.

There was a crux disc for sale here a few weeks ago that had me very tempted...

I actually have a trek XO-1 for sale that I rode two times and gave up on so looking for something considerably different than that.

I have a Salsa Vaya frame that meets your tire clearance requirement but not the lightweight tubing requirement. It has a lower BB than a typical cross bike but will also be slower handling or more stable depending how you want to describe the geometry.

I have a black, 1998 Independent Fabrications Planet Cross. 50 x 54.5. Head tube is 115 and the standover with 28c tires is 78.5cm or just under 31 inches. I think the standard ht/st angles are 71.5/72. I wrote to IF with the serial # and they said they thought is was stock and should match the size 50 numbers from this chart: http://ifbikes.com/assets/documents/customize/traditional-sizing.pdf

Seems right except that my head tube is 115 rather than 111mm.

It's a one inch head tube, and has the slightest slope to the top tube. There is a tiny ding in the top tube right behind the head tube that has been painted. Hard to see with cables installed.

The ride is quick, snappy, and comfy, as you'd expect from an 853 Indy Fab. A very nice bike, that I need to sell b/c I got a disc frame. Oh: a previous owner brazed on front and rear fender eyelets. It was done well and unobtrusively, and it's hard to see the touch-up paint without knowing it's there. I can include a black King headset, a black no-offset Thomson post, and a 1 to 1 1/8 shim. Have a pair of TRP CX 8.4s as well.

So...frame, fork, headset, post, shim, 8.4s: $750 plus actual shipping.

If there's interest I can take more detailed photos.
