They did. They quit the lifestyle they were living. Went back to being free instead of trying to be some civilization with 99% working to support 1%. People tend to forget that it was only their civilization that disappeared. The people didn't. Still there in fact.

Seems to me the question is why if we're so smart we can't learn anything from what we've learned.
