Ravi Shankar on Dick Cavett Show (and some other guy who's just sitting there) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gWCiLexilY)

Edit: BTW, the video linked at the NYT site in the area labeled "Multimedia" is really cool.

Bad spate of influential musician deaths recently: Elliott Carter, Dave Brubeck, now Ravi Shankar... I'm gonna be wearing black for two solid months!

When I was 11 years old I attended an elective six week summer school class in Art & Art History or something like that. I just remember that for the final project we had to assume the role of a famous artist and give a presentation to the class in the guise of that person. I chose Ravi Shankar. Even built a non-functioning two-dimensional sitar as a prop. To this day I sometimes employ structural aspects of the Indian raga in my compositions that I learned while researching that project.

RIP Ravi.

+1 and created the legacy of bringing musicians together to benefit and bring awareness to international charitable causes. The world lost a true gem. May he rest in peace.

I was kucky enough to see him with Stanley Clarke in the late 70s. Amazing what he did with the sitar.

He also did beautifully all of the early soundtracks for Satyajit Ray.
