I've read some say it works and some say it doesn't...

I'm assembling parts and wheels for my next build. This will be my D2R2 bike (lots of steep climbs) so I want to get my gearing as low as possible with Campy 11.

Hoping to use 13-29 cassette with 50/34 crank.

I currently have a Chorus 11 short cage RD. Do I need to try to find a medium?

I have heard that it works. It is the limit, but I have also enquired about this combo and have been told it will work by people who claim to have done it.

I'm sitting on a compact Athena UT crank at home and a 13-29 cassette. I have used the cassette with a 39 and a standard Centaur rear der and it works perfectly.

I have that exact gearing combo on my Legend right now. After slugging out the vt 6-gap stuff with 27t in the rear I bought the big dog cassette, works perfectly.

I Run Chorus 11 with 12-29 and 50-34 cranks. Works perfectly. I also run a 12-25 and there is no difference in shifting. The 11spd RD is designed for 12-29. I do not think that there is a longer cage version of the 11spd RD, but I certainly may be wrong.

There is no longer cage made for a double crank bike. The short cage is made to work with a 12-29.

Campy just came out with a new Athena 11 speed triple RD that has a longer cage, but is not needed unless you have a triple crank.

Exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks everybody.

IIRC, the initial 11 spd RD's were good to 27 teeth, per Campy. They made a minor running change to allow them to handle the new 12-29 cassette a year or so later. I suspect both will work OK, it's just that the later RD is 'optimized' for that use.

Again, IIRC...

Thanks for the headsup. Glad to see triples aren't quite dead yet. Although 3X11 does seem like a lot of gears for a bike.

Hadn't seen that Campy went to 12-30 for 10 speed either. Just a guess that 30-tooth big sprocket will find its way to 11s too if it hasn't already.

Would be fun to test their 50-39-30 with a 12-30 cassette.

Works for me.
