Since this is a "ride around the streets of my neighborhood" bike I need to swap out the knobby WTBs that came with my ss 29er. I'm currently thinking Schwalbe Big Apple. Anyone care to offer an opinion on that or any other mostly slick 29er tire?

TIA

I mean, really, you can use any 700x30+ tire on whatever rims you're running.

There was another tire in addition to the Big Apple that I heard was very good - very popular among the 650b crowd as I recall. Black tread, gumwall, I just can't place the name...

Until a day or so ago I didn't realize that, but as I started to research this I figured that out. (Except that 700x30 might be a bit narrow.)

I wish tire sizing weren't so complicated - if only folks would use a single standard. (somehow, I don't think I'm the first person to say this)

Yeah, it's awesome, isn't it? Especially now that we have both 650b and 650c tires in our shop. Mmm diversity...

By the way, the tire I was thinking of was the Grand Bois Cypres. It's Grand Bois' 700x32c, which will likely work with your rims.

You may want something bigger and/or cheaper, but those tires are the bomb!

If you want bigger and don't mind a little tread the WTB vulpine are quite nice.

700 x 38 Vittoria Hyper Randonneur (also 32c and 35c), if you need a little tread...Kenda Small Block 8s (32c, 35c, or 2.10s).

The big apple is a good tire at a reasonable price. It's a good choice unless you particularly wanted something narrower.

My experience is all with the previous version, but I'm assuming they haven't changed it much with the new tread pattern.

Agreed the Big Apple is a very well made tire. My experience with it is on my local commuter although I have them on a 26" wheel. None the less, I've found them to be is reasonably light for what it what they are (mine are the liteskin version), provide good puncture protection, durable, and have nice ride qualities. I'm sure this will translate up to the larger 700c size.

I really like the set of Maxxis Overdrive tires I just put on my crosscheck. The roll really well and grip in the corners better than some slicks I've had. They aren't cheap but they aren't expensive either. I have the 700x35 size but They make some bigger ones.

Small Block 8s are a good neighborhood tire. Big Apples are really heavy (I had the 2.35s).

I also really like the VIttoria Randonneur Hypers, I have a set on my commuter/randonneuring bike.

However, if it's just for around town, I'd go for something cheaper. I have a set of Kenda Kwests on my grocer store bike. They're wire bead, pretty stiff side wall, but only $18 each. They hold air and don't flat easily. For me, for just going to the store, they're fine.

YMMV,

Chris

I've heard great things about the Resist Nomad tires. They come in both 700x35 and 700x45 sizes, black or tan sidewall.

Cheap too. As soon as the tan sidewall 700x45's are back in stock, I'm getting a pair for the Karate Monkey.

Anything less than a 45 on a MTB just looks stupid to my eyes.

Save the mid range sizes for the tourers, crossers and re enactors.
