Wide mountain bike rims?

I have a hardtail 29er that I enjoy riding, but I don't follow mountain bike technology carefully. Are wide rims gaining traction (no pun intended) in the off-road arena? It seems like it would make sense.

Yes, wider and shallower for tubeless applications.

How wide do you need to go? I've seen tons of 25mm rims, lots of 27-28mm rims, and a handful in the 30-35mm range. At what point do they get too heavy?
