Anyone know the max width tire for a Campy proton? If vintage of the wheel matters, it is between 5 and 10 years old.

I'm using a 25mm tire on my protons, wouldn't hesitate to run a 28 either, but mine are about 10 years old.

I ran 32s and I think 35s when I used Protons on my cross bike. I never had a problem, but that doesn't mean you won't.

Dude,

When I clicked on this thread, I thought I was going to have to use avogadro's number to calculate how many atoms were in your wide tires...

I have 28's on my protons. No problems at all.

Thanks to all. MattTruck wins as far as responses go, though.

Things I forgot that I forgot that I knew. I had to Google it.

To answer the question remember that the first "light" mountain bike rims were cut down MA40s (and maybe G40s?) shod with 2.1 to 2.5" tires (pre-suspension forks/frames). You could get 17mm wide rims back then.

I ran 2.1-2.35" (Ritchey WCS) tires on 17mm rims (Sun M17s), 20-35 psi, on and off road, back in the day.

I imagine that you could run pretty wide tires on your Protons.

Someone I know ran Jack Browns on a set of Neutrons at D2R2. Protons are basically Neutrons with visible nipples, so I'd say 33.33333mm is the maximum.

Not sure about the max. I put 700x30s on neutrons and they look good. Will have to see how they ride.

(e^iπ + 1) + (probably) (whatever “cross” (clincher) tires you thought you wanted to try)

Not sure, but I've got a set of cheap Campy clinchers (not protons, however) for when the cross bike is used for commuting -- I've got 32c Vittoria file treads on them now and it all seems fine.

edit: freaking utility won't let me type or insert the symbol for pi -- if it's not obvious because of the stupid type-setting, that's one side of Euler's identity).

I love my Protons but not wrestling to get tires on. I really wanted to get a new pair of my favorite tires, GP4000s, but Continentals and Protons repel one another. Anyone know what brands are easier to mount?
Did I just hijack a thread?
