There's an academic book about the societal/cultural importance of the Tour de France. The first big anti-drug push came in the mid-60s. Prior to that, PEDs, such as they were, were an accepted part of cycling. The author concluded, fairly convincingly, that the anti-drug push in sports was due to society's reaction to what it perceived as rampent drug use by "hippies."

"The percentage of really sketchy people who are in these powerful and influential positions is very high"... He couldn't be talking about university professors!

"Sketchy knows sketchy", he continues, with only a trace of irony in his voice.

Funny guy! Intentionally or otherwise I'm not going to speculate.
