Im looking for a bottom bracket to suit a Superbe Pro crankset from 1988 (date stamp E-D). There seems to be various opinions about on the internet regarding the taper and spindle length. Catalogues I have found tell me 109mm. But the taper - JIS, ISO or did Suntour have something special? Seems like a Phil Wood 108 is the closest I can get or should I use the 111 to be safe? This is for a Team Miyata SL from 84/85.

Suntour superbe was a proprietary taper. ISO is the closest to it that is readily available.

One on Velobase is listed as JIS 112 mm, the other ISO with no length given.

I have a S. Pro crank here, probably a bit newer than yours. I could put a Veloce 111 in a frame and see where it comes out.

Phil Wood used to make a "116 for Superbe" bottom bracket (in the 2000 Rivendell catalog). Might be worth a call to PW or Rivendell.

This is the problem I have come up against. Have tried JIS campagnolo, iso and TA spindles but cant really pick one mainly cause I dont want to tighten the thing down.
I agree though, the campagnolo one seems best

ISO...If the crank isn't new-get a 110.5 from Phil..

I, repeat, I...use grease and 2 tools for the cups...no loctite and dry spindle to 30 ft-lbs of torque, with a torque wrench.

Do that on customer's bikes, did that on my own Moots with a 2004 Record crank...I, I have not seen any problems with this technique for almost 3 decades...

Those cranks along with the road ones are very, very nice...

Actually I have a choice between a used (mint) 165mm SSP or a NOS cyclone in 170mm. I'd like to keep it all SSP if possible. I have never ridden 165mm cranks before so if I dont like it I will go the cyclone. The spindle lenght is different but note your comment on NEW. Whats the significance of new from a BB perspective?
Anyone got a very good 170mm SSP crank from 82 on?;)

Only as the crank it put on and taken off a few times it does draw on a wee bit more. If the crank is spec'ed for a 109...and 20 some years old..maybe a 111 would be a better idea.
