i had the day off because my nurse was planning to be out of the office
and thought i needed to take the day away to regroup, too...
i had a chance to get out for a fixed lake lap with clydesdale
and he reminded me of a trail i hadn't been on for years.
as i recall, i didn't go far back then on the crosser...
last time i was out this far was pre-fat tire bike.
so, to me the fat tire is so special
i think it's time for
a dedicated thread
...anything you would ride
and expect to go no further on any other bike,
or look back and say to those unable to follow
"c'mon man" -- goes in here!

Don't have any pics myself, but it looks like rides I take from time to time. Cross-country type stuff at a leisurely pace. My tires are only 1.95 inches wide, but the old bike is a pretty cushy full susser Super V500. Almost like that bike was made for such use. I guess the squish makes up for the relatively narrow tires unless I get into deep mud or loose sand.

Nice pics anyway, thanks.

Posting pics Of your fat tire bike and the setting you enjoy riding it...
Is what it's all about!
...a two inch wide tire is fat in my book...
I don't think a big Larry or clown shoe
Is the limit on this thread...
I was riding my terraplane with 28s for gravel
On a road ride with friends and got the comment
-- "what's with the fat tires" --
Guess it depends on what you're comparing...
You got what you consider phat tires?!?
--Post away!
So here's a comparison for you!
Last week I took Bojibiker and his wife out
For a 30th anniversary single track ride!
She chose the moonlander.
Bojiman said when he built the Ross
Back in the day
He never thought he would ever find it so lacking!

wonder what my ride report would sound like after taking that thing out for a spin???
love the saddle, the fenders, the bell
and mostly the rear cog that looks more like a circular saw blade!

Here are some of my misc. fatbike pics. The last couple are from the last day of the ski season at Purgatory last year - at the end of the day they cleared out all of the skiers and let fatbikes have the run of the place (including lift service) for a $1 donation to the local DEVO program.

That's my daughter in the last one - when she rides her Strider bike she insists I ride the "red clown bike" :)

I rode my skinny tired road bike so little I sold it... There is a Pugsley at my LBS, I have feelings for it I can't share in polite company.

I did ride my fat tired 26" hardtail last night, the frame looks familiar to one person here!

Bojibiker is pretty happy princeton's
Fall break has given a well timed evacuation!
sounds like 200 plus trees are down on campus
yet the office and essential staff may be able to give it a go
as early as tomorrow.

one ride on the pug and his daughter is hooked--not so much a fan
of the candy pedals...overall, though, it
looks like the moonlander and pug have a new home for the week...

...of course, there's more
and a horrible video or two on the blog

I love riding up from Alpine Road to top of Borel Hill, climbing through the mist to be above the clouds.

Tires are Specialized Ground Control 2.3 in front and Specialized Fast Trak 2.2 in the back.

Nice, I bike in the bay too so I'll have to check out that spot.
What frame is that? I'm considering a Retrotec Twin bc of I love bent tubes.

Hopefully I can post my own photos in a couple of weeks. Keep them comin' y'all!

edit: I saw the post on the best deal thread. Will check out Coconino. Nice bike!

Here are a few from a recent trip on the Kokopelli Trail. The trail is 142 miles long and runs from Loma, CO to Moab, UT.

The scenery is amazing and we didn't see any other riders until we reached the shuttle dropoff point for the Porcupine Rim Trail.

Curt Inglis of Retrotec, Steve Garro of Coconino, and Rody of Groovy Cycleworks all can build great riding MTBs with curved top tubes.

Yes, I wanted a mud proof bike so I can continue riding when it's wet without the dreaded chainsuck.

Here is the thread with more pictures and descriptions about the build.

Yep, Larry up front, Ardent in the back. Jones' geometry works like magic with the weight of the front wheel. Super fun bike to ride...

I have been having issues with my moonlander--
Front wheel pulls up off the ground climbing steep grades.
I have looked at those blacksheep forks
That have some substance to them but the jones geo
Seems to be working well for you!

Also thinking this looks fun
And would be worth checking out!

Before the high school performed Cats
And the extended family had dinner
Everyone took off on errands
And I was left at home with the moonlander.
Gravel, cross country, ditch riding, beach, hill climbing--
20 miles around here can test your courage!
I declare big fat tire season
Officially begins when all the docks are out
And the mile stretch of beach at our new place
Is open for waterfront riding!

Overcame the front wheel lift phenomenon
By sliding forward on the saddle and laying low
Toward the bars...worked great!

My fatty is caked in mud after yesterday's ride. It's going to take a few hours (beers?) to clean it up. I don't regret it one bit!

What bike is the cream one? Love the shockboard.

I wonder whether it handles better with the dirt bars or if you had flat bars on it. For me, the drop bar seems to put too much reach when I am at on the hood grabbing the brakes, since I am weighing the front too much. Don't know if it turns better when you are on the top bar or the drops, but won't have a hand on the bake though.

Singular gryphon. Very similar to Salsa fargo but a bit shorter chainstays, a few less fender/rack/water bottle bosses and a bit different geometry. I just got it built up this weekend, but so far I love it.

It is designed for drop bars and I have it set up with just a few centimeters drop, which seems about right for the gravel road/rough pavement/non-technical single track that I want to be covering on any given ride. It might come down a bit; we'll see. I've shortened the reach by about a centimeter from my road bikes, and with slightly higher bars I've a bit more upright position. If I was going to ride predominately on dirt I've stick on a +10 degree stem and get the bars up just a bit higher. As it is the drop to the hooks is about the same as the drop to my shifters on my road bikes.

It rides very well on the road; quick turning but dead stable and with these big wheels I can now just cruise straight over the potholes and gaps in the pavement rather than weaving in and out trying to avoid them. And it does fine on the easy singletrack that I can get to from my house. The reviews on line are very positive, and for just over $600 for frame/fork and phil wood eccentric bottom bracket I think it is a heckva deal!

Udell Hills section of North Country Trail.
LBS just started carrying Surley fatties.
I took a spin around town on one and they seemed a little more agile than they look.
Could be fun.
