My bike is a Fierte ti with an S3 fork. Anyone know off-hand how big I can go on tires? I have 23s right now and it looks like I'd have plenty of clearance for 27s or 28s maybe. Can anyone speak from experience?

I could just take my bike to my LBS and try a bunch but I'm so lazy... :p

I have a steel fierte and I've had Conti 28s on it without problem. Currently using Michelen 25s though. I doubt a larger 28 would fit. I'm sure lots can comment on the S3 fork, but I've never had one.

Conti 4 Season 28's measure about 26 mm.

Hrm, I think I'm looking for more of a "true" 28 to take on some light gravel stuff with a little more confidence. Actually my 23c GP3000s do way better on gravel than I would've expected but I have to be careful.

I know the LBS will have Gatorskins in stock. Any feedback on those?

I'm "pretty sure" that Pasela 28s will rub the paint off the chainstays on a Fierte.
Yep, pretty sure.

No info on the Gatorskins. I have a new frame and I am looking for the largest tire that will fit. I have a set of 28c Schwalbe Durano's that measure just over 28mm in width and they barely fit the new frame. Chainstay clearance is OK but both tires have a "hump" that reduces the clearance to about 1 mm to the brake bridge when the hump rotates past. I assume it is a manufacturing defect. However, 1 mm is too close for comfort for me so I have a set of Panaracer T-Serves (28c) and and Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy's (27c) coming to me in the mail to check out clearances.

Aww, that's no fun. :( OTOH my Fierte has no paint so problem solved!

I ran gatorskin 28s on my Fierte. It worked, but was very very tight.

Blerg. Maybe I'll just shoot for 27s. I must not know how to judge clearance because it sure looks like there is plenty.

Over here http://www.xo-1.org if you search for "Fierte" towards the bottom of the page, she is running 700c x 29mm which just fit.
