View Full Version : Nokon Housing ... On a cross bike

I've been lusting over Nokon housing for several years now and I have finally put it on my cross bike. I've come across a few issues with the install process/ Note: As I have hydraulic disc brakes on my cross bike, I am only using the SHIFT kit from Nokon, not the brakes.

1) Plan on buying the extension kit.
A "Road Shift Kit" does not work with a cross bike unless your bike was designed for shift cable housing ONLY from the shifters to the down tube and then the small piece from the chainstay to the derailleur. With the extension kit, you only get an additional two cable ends to sit in the cable stops on the frame. This leaves you short of two cable end pieces for a cross bike with cabling routed as shown below.

2) How do I keep the rear section of housing from going into the cassette?
With the rear derailleur cable stop being on the seat stay, the rear section of Nokon housing is flexible and long enough to slap around and go into the cassette. Should I replace the shorter beads with the longer ones to try and make it more stiff? Should I remove several beads and reduce the radius of the bend? :help:

Runs of Nokon get floppy as the cable tension decreases. It can be partially allayed by reducing the length of the run and then further by using about 3"~4" of 1/4" heat shrink tubing on each end which will control how much the Nokon can flop around. Not a pretty result but it works.

It's an inherent characteristic of the beaded-type cable housing to be wobbly when there is very little or no tension on the inner wires.

Is that hole next to the dropout threaded? If so, I'd buy a bolt that fits it and one of these (http://www.estcoenterprises.com/images/pp/cable-clamps.jpg) from the local hardware store and restrict the housing movement.

That's a great idea, Choke.

thats a very nice bike!

What shifters will you be running with hydraulic brakes? Or do you have some kind of adapter?

Imo nokons aint worth it. They also make a very annoying sound.

I am using SRAM Rival shifters and the 324labs.com (http://324labs.com) adapters with Formula R1 brakes. Shimano XT Ice-Tech 160mm rotors front and back.

I'll try and post up about the adapters in a different thread when I can get some good pictures of them on my bike.

I have heard some people complain that the Nokon gets squeaky, but since this is on my cross bike the only thing I hear is pain, suffering and my teeth chattering on descents.

Looks good. How do they function? Whats the verdict? How are you running the rear brake hose? I would imagine it would be tight through the normal cable stops..

EnjoY!

When ever mine start to make even a little noise I take a rag and some prolink and give them a quick squirt and wipe down. I only have to do this once in a while and it is usually accompanied by a good cleaning of the whole bike.
