This may seem a little early but...
I am on the winter rig--pugsley powered by
The white industries double double drivetrain
With the winter giro helmet, gloves and winter lake boots.
38 degrees, steady rain 40mph winds
Felt like winter the last two days...
So much so
I drove to the trail as if I were cross country skiing
5 miles from the office.
Ran into a downed branch
That brought me to an abrupt stop
And almost broke my chain
With a stick in the drivetrain.
...glad I was in ss mode...

Winter riding is great, in PHX.

The mishap seemed to have turned you around, though

You need a custom fat bike. Something Ti maybe a fat blacksheep would look good in Iowa. Surly was a good start but you need to take it to the next level.

haha says the guy with the two hot ti bikes.

Never tried huge tires but looks fun.

As for me I forgot my fender today and got crap all over my back. Wake up call for the next few months!

I really needed a front fender most

Are over-rated.

...and jack...you are absolutely right!
I have been looking for just the right bike--
There have been a few blacksheep
That have caught my eye,
A ti mukluk at the angry catfish,
I have spoken with Eric Estlund at length
About a custom project
And looked at the firefly bikes on fnl longingly...
At this point, driving a car worth more
Than the bike it's hauling has been
Quite a change for me...

What's with the rear brake cable routing on the Pug? Is there some reason it doesn't follow the top tube like on a traditional frame? Looks like it would severely limit a right turn!

I decided it attach the brake cable
To the top tube a few seasons back.
The zip tie I used was broken off in a crash
And I left it free again thinking
It would wear and need to be replaced.
There's no restriction with turns whatsoever though

We've had a pretty mild winter so far here in CT. It's close to fifty now, but raining. It's a gym day today in any case.

Later this week we're looking at temps in the teens during my normal ride time. Should be fun stuff.

Pic from the daily ride in a local open-space area. Since it hasn't snowed in a while, fat tires can ride all of the singletrack-- lots of the same routes as summer riding. After a fresh snow, we're "stuck" with the groomed multi-use trails. 5', perfect crunchy snow. Happy dog and rider. Wonderful!

Its been a pretty mild winter overall here in the DC area. If this is global warming, I'll take it!

Got out the last few days thru the rain we've had. 2hrs on Tues and got drizzled and had spits of rain the whole time.

Got talked into riding last nite despite the couch monster having a grip on me. Did the dirt roads round the area. Wet, muddy, slick, fun.

Just went out for an easy hour +.

The Haymarket ride's been going on pretty much every Wed it isn't actually precipitating. 1800 at the shop. We go over Waterfall, up and over Busthead Rd and around and then back up and over Bull Run Mtn rd. All in all, lots of fun with lights on.

All-in-all, I've had a pretty good winter. Here's hoping this snow they're calling for doesn't happen. I've got 4hrs planned for tomorrow

I made it out two days ago (I'm about 15 miles south of Minneapolis) hoping to hit the gravel roads on my Mukluk but they were iced over so I stuck to the paved shoulder instead. I did manage to find some snow at one point and made of it what I could.

Cheating winter a few hours at a time... (https://vimeo.com/57541901)

Gotta love it!

2.5 hrs of dirt roads today in toodle mode. There were a few hills that were impossible to get up in toodle mode, but overall, it was a pretty slow ride.

75 degrees here today. Took off at 10 AM in just a jersey and shorts. Wound down the afternoon sitting in the sun in the back yard with a beer, listening to the Jayhawks wafting out of our open windows. Ah Arizona. This is the time of year when AZ doesn't suck.

As Lewis has in AZ. Epic day, a bunch of climbing and the last pics of the channel islands and that's Catalina Island out ahead of the dude fishing. I hear the sand bass are hot right now. 35 miles and 5000ft of ascending today. At least the same or more tomorrow somewhere different. Stay tuned for pics.

I spent yesterday afternoon with the fat-bike on a couple of lakes not far from home. This was a new experience for me and one that I really enjoyed. No worries of flatting or of traffic.

There was about an inch of snow to give me some traction over the ice otherwise I wouldn't have ventured out there with my non-studded tires.

Pure fun! (http://youtu.be/3YSWEkakG2g)

The next time I visit my Dad down in the east bay (Pinole) I think i'll bring my bike and have my Dad drive me up there for a ride. Have you had the Steve Potts out lately I never get tired of the pictures of that beautiful bike?

TOUC runs well up north in Humboldt County. Fortuna IIRC.

The Potts is at my other home. Figure to dust it off for some brevets and a double or two this spring.

Let me know if you make it up Occidental way and we'll hook up for a ride.

25 degrees and the wind blowing strong out of the northwest at 25 miles per hour

...pretty nice day for a ride on the lake with my dobegirl katy
we stopped at the turn around when the slush meant a
crack in the ice made going further to the source of the lake
a little bit of a bad idea for a noon ride.

Yesterday I smacked into a tree with the evoque, fell hard on my back and lost track of the dog in the woods attempting to make use of the four inches of fresh snowfall. Too much base layer ice! Today I pulled the ML back out and found the sweet spot in winter riding bliss. Just like the resort...left the bike out on the ice to take a quick yellow fin tuna break...maybe i should try for a fresh water perch instead!

Great picture it looks like more fun riding in the snow then riding in the rain we have here in Washington. My question is what type handle bar bag is that and does it stay real secure off road. I need a new bag and ride off road and want it to be real secure not bouncing around and or falling off the handle bars.

Finally got around to picking up a Mukluk and tried it out for the first time today. Figured I would try riding from my current house to the one I’m building just outside of town. We’ve had 20” of snow in the last week, so was hoping the snow shoers have been out packing down the trails. If things work out, this will be my commute for the next 2-3 months. Was a perfect day – mid 20’s with a bright yellow thing in the sky we haven’t seen lately.

Why would I want a snowbike???

nice pics there ^ Mukluk Brother!

I got out for a second time today... did a ride with 80% snow-covered trail, figured out going up a 7% hill on a fat bike in snow is not so much fun... ;:help: trail started out not to bad with a lot of prior foot traffic, the further I got back on the trail the less foot prints but they were deeper making for a bumpy ride at times... good times though, met a St. Bernard along the way that made the Mukluk look normal size!

Here in North Germany (Berlin) the weather report is "freezing and snowing." Yes ladies and gents we're in the second half of March and winter is still in full effect.
Fat bikes are never to be seen here, but in a recent bike show (March 10/11), there was one beautiful handmade Fat Bike with Lefty fork!
You can check it out here http://blog.totembikes.com/ and also here http://jambis.tumblr.com and http://flic.kr/p/e1Zs98

There was also a titanium handbuild fat bike that was pure lust (http://flic.kr/p/e1ZxVn). She was a tad bit expensive with 11,111 Euro price tag. Local builder as well.

And now back to winter riding.

This morning down in town it was great to be out at the bike park... no snow, not freezing.

Fourflys, that mukluk looks good in its natural habitat.

Those mukluks, snow shots and bike park riding are pretty inspirational to me.
Early morning meeting.
Training on phase three of our emr
(Electronic medical record)
And I was starting to feel pretty hopeless.
I read this thread and decided to at least get out
And take the dobegirl for a walk!
I read the thread again
And decided to give it a go on the lake
And offroad trail...
Now I'm thinking there's nothing I can't do...
Thanks for the wonderful posts/pics and links!

That's a happy snow dog.

We have great snow bike conditions on my backyard trails right now. I got out the last 3 days and this morning.

But very, very fun...world's best amusement park ride!?!
May be time to break out the monster zip ties!
A couple hours of icescapades
And I was glad to get home in one piece!
...couple inches of snow in the forecast
Could help immensely...

We were about a quarter mile from the house
No one was around...
I called, sent a text and an email to my wife...
I knew there wasn't time to do much except
Put down my phone and my hat
And crawl out to pull her to safety.
After years of teaching life saving
I used all I knew
To make it out safe and sound...
As I reached to pull her to safety
The ice gave way to my knees
And I went in head first...way over my head...
I surfaced, calmed Katy and then
I broke several feet of ice ledge away
Until the ice was thick enough back
The way I came to support both my
And Katy's waterlogged state...
We then walked back to the house
Cleaned up for Passover.
Thankful

Wow. Glad you're both ok...
I went thru ice once when I was a kid - the water was only up to my knees. I will only go on ice now if I absolutely have to.

Happy Pesach

That is scary, glad to hear you made it out OK! Every year we lose a couple folks in the lake (usually with their snowmobile). I'd keep a set of Ice Safety Picks handy if I was heading out on Ice.

Thought about running back for some
But had the horrible notion
That I might have found I was too late
By the time I got back with help/prepared...

I couldn't help but think I've got about one day left of winter riding.
The dobegirl and I got a double reverse loop in and came
Across no other takers today...hope to get out tomorrow
For one more ride before the snow is gone --until Wednesday is
The most current forecast!
10 miles total...2 solid hours
Great to see the runoff filling up the very driest of places!

Spidey - I am with you... Last week I thought the snow was on its way out, then we got 2 more feet.

Oh the skinny tires will be out soon enough and the extra snow helps keep the fires at bay so I am OK with it!

Cheers,
-Joe

My wife wanted to get out and hit the trail...
