An astounding rider. Loved the profile of him in Rouleur a couple issues back. That photo of him gritting a tubular in his teeth so he could ride with that broken collarbone is iconic.

It's the end of an era. Not only was he one of the greatest cyclists of the Golden Age (among Coppi, Bartali, Bobet, Kubler, Koblet, Van Steenbergen and many others), but he introduced extra-sportif sponsorships in cycling. Before, only makers of bicycles or bicycle parts had sponsored teams, but when his team was in financial trouble he brought in Nivea as a sponsor, and afterwards the floodgates opened.
