View Full Version : Bike Racks for the Apartment

Here's the situation.

I live in Manhattan.

I am getting married this Saturday  (we currently live together).

I have three bikes in the apartment and would like to add a fourth.

I do not want to get prematurely divorced.

We have a foyer that's about 8 feet by 15 feet with one wall open for bike hanging.

Suggestions for wall-hanging bike recommendations that are nice looking and optimize space?

THANK YOU for helping my soon-to-be marriage!

$20 at REI (http://www.rei.com/product/739528/delta-cycle-leonardo-da-vinci-wall-rack)

Edit: Apparently (reading the comments on the REI site) this works best for bikes with road tires, not fat MTB tires.

I should say the bike needs to be parallel to the wall, not as shown in picture. The space does not allow for that type of setup

Thanks!

regular rubberized hooks screwed into the ceiling with bikes hanging upside down by both wheels

I have one of these. Works fine and can be moved/removed. I like it because of my walls are stucco (or something) and drilling into the wall is a real PITA.

There's this cool looking one from Thule:

Or the same thing for much less (which I suspect is made by the same Thule owned subsidiary that makes the Thule branded rack,)

Based on a recommendation here on the forum when I was looking for wooden options, I ordered a 4-bike stand from these guys.

Rich LTD (http://www.richltdfixtureoutlet.com/products/bicycle-displays)

I was happy with the result.

I plan on attempting to build this same thing only scaled up for 5 bikes! Not sure how much the wood, screws, and hooks will cost, but it has to be one of the lower cost options out there. This guy used scrap wood, so if you have any DIY homebuilder or carpenter friends off to a good start.

I don't think you'll have to use 2x4's. If you do, that's going to be a pretty beefy (read: heavy) setup.

yeah, good luck with that....;)

no matter what, it's going to be ridiculously space consuming. been there, done that.

so...be prepared for the eventual stink eye. to mitigate it, go with frequent flowers for the wife, an occasional pampering with you making her a nice home cooked meal with wine, and cap it off with providing her a lovely foot massage.

Not exactly sure what's possible with your space, but if you do want to have all or some of them paralell to the wall, I really like my Cycloc - http://www.cycloc.com/

Not the cheapest wall mount, but looks nice in my opinion...

I have a Topeak Dual-Touch with 4 mounts. It stick out from the wall a couple feet but it works decently well.

I have a delta rack like the one pictured except mine requires bolting to the ceiling which this one the michelangelo does not. http://www.lifestylefancy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Delta-Cycle-Michelangelo-2-Bike-Wall-Rack_2.jpg

For four bikes, hanging them by the wheels will take up less space width-wise but will take up more depth, so it really depends on your space. The GearUp rack (http://www.sportssolutions.net/inc/sdetail/11000___steady_rack_brand_new_for_2011/402/9890) looks pretty nice because it allows you to hang the bike at an angle so the bikes don't stick out into the room as much. Signature has something similar in their new Greenwich shop, but from a different manufacturer and it looked even better. I'll see if I can get more info.

I have that same rack.
It easily fits four bikes (I put two bikes on each pair of arms), has a small footprint, and cheap.

This is awesome, thanks for the idea. Am working on a new workspace/storage area.

does this need to be strapped to the wall, or is it completely free standing? (have plaster walls and drop ceilings -- don't know what might work in my situation..)

Search 'Bike Storage Options for Apartments' across the hall for more examples. I posted the link earlier but the mods removed my post for some reason.

It comes with nail and strap, but I freestand it.
The rubber feet does a great job on hardwood floor.
I haven't adjusted the rack for over an year and I reach/switch bikes 4 times a week.

If you want horizontal storage, go with Floaterhoist. It takes only the width of your handlebar from the top.

I got a CondeRack wooden 4-bike rack on Craigslist. It is certainly a large apparatus, but it works very well. I think that our space is similar to yours.

This is a great thread. I need a bike rack for my own apartment, and there are some very good suggestions here.

Nope. You posted it in a different thread about protecting frames from corrosion: http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=117712
