I can only imagine what it took to get out and start working out after 10 years sitting in the house weighing 570. Probably a tremendous will power and then some, good stuff!

cycling is not generally very friendly to people who aren't ectomorphs (i.e. skinny types). you have to buy a thousand dollar bike, and that tends to weed out a lot of people, and we don't typically have clydesdale classes at the races that I've been in.

so, yeah, this guy is bada$$. from 570lbs down to 240. man.

Edit: I don't mean to bring up the doping threads, but for me, the sport isn't about the pros. it's about people like this guy. or the people taking time off work or school to go train. or even just the people cycling or jogging or walking down the multi use trails to lose a couple of pounds or get in a bit better shape.

down 240 to 330*, but that doesn't change anything about the level of awesome.

I talked to him a couple years ago when he was just starting out and would come to watch cross races. He had a hard road to go down because it wasn't like he could just hop on and ride. He started with a lot of indoor riding nd then needed to always have a riding partner for short outside rides because there was a high risk of collapse. Nice guy.

I think we'd all agree that entering the cycling world at 570lbs is the very definition of brave. I wish him all the best.

He is just the epitome of guts and determination.

Fun to watch him race knowing the story.

Cool that sport of cyclocross inspired him.

I saw a picture of him today with JPow. He looks like he's the size of 5 JPows. Great for him to start riding!

This guy rocks. We could all use a little bit more of what he's got. And he chooses cross - love it!

Given the reputation of the typical "serious roadie" I'm not at all surprised.

Have seen him at all the big CX races in the Northeast for the last three seasons.

Very cool and definitely inspiring.

Not only just a guy who wants to lose weight, but a true cycling fan. You don't spend most weekends in the fall driving to, and watching, cx races if you're not passionate about the sport.

Good for him. I know if my body reacted to a western diet in the same way, I would never have the discipline to do that.

This story made my week. If he travels to Florida, I'll pay his entry to any CX race I'm at. I'd be willing to bet that he is closer to most of us here in spirit than most of us are to the a typical race bred cyclist. Spirit, drive and community is something we all need to recognize and embrace. Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life-- well, maybe you'll work a little in CX, but you all get what I mean.

So often people this size go for the surgery. Great story. Good for him...:)

Here is the picture. I love the common person (like me) getting into CX. It's cool to see JPow riding with him. He seems like a pretty good guy even though he's a rock star.

That is J-Pow riding second wheel.

The amount of effort and caring that the MIT cycling team put into making this all happen in such a positive way is very cool.

He posted on Facebook today that he was going to try and complete a 30 mile hilly ride that he has only attempted one other time (and bonked) in the next week.

His story just keeps getting better and better.

And he is a nice guy to boot!
