I'm pretty sure i'm picking up a nice set of ambrosio wheels tonight from one of our generous forumites. they are laced to 105 hubs, 32 hole. i'll keep the front intact, but want to get the rear rebuilt around something with a campy compatible hub.

anything readily available new for < $100? I'm thinking this is going to be the ultimate "spring classic" wheelset.

edit: i see bikehubstore has some, any feedback on these??

I've built a couple sets with the bikehubstore hubs and so far no complaints. They seem to hold up well enough and the price is certainly right.

Go with Miche Racing Box. About $110 a set:

Another option for a campy compatible rear hub is the Ambrosio Zenith rear hub for $69:

http://www.totalcycling.com/road-components/hubs/hubs_road/HB_ZENITH_S_R_CAMPAGNOLO.html

At 268g w/o skewers its reasonably light, comes in silver or black and in sizes 28/32/36h. Further, these are basically the same hub that Jan H. sells as the Grand Bois. Jan raves about those hubs, so the same must be true for these. What's not to like?! Good Luck!

Do just need the compatibility or you don't like the 105s? If it is a compatibility issue, just get a conversion cassette like Am. Classic or Wheels Mfg. They work great.

Another vote for the Miche hubs. I have two sets. One is virtually silent, the other a little less so. They roll well. Can't be the price. Look good too. Nice red skewers. One set is debadged.

Unfortunately the Wheels Mfg conversion cassette (i've only briefly used the Am Classic and wasn't impressed) does not play nice with Shimano brand hubs (and of course, Chris King hubs as well). Actually says so in their literature, IIRC.

Been there and done that with DA and Ultegra hubs. Doubt 105's are different...

i have no interest in conversion cassettes, especially for 11-speed.

that dt hub looks nice, but i need 32 hole...

i like the looks of that ambrosio hub a lot...

Peter, do you have a preference for the Velocities over the Miche? Hub geometries are different so I'm wondering if there's a noticeable difference in wheel stiffness and/or strength with bracing angles, NDS tension %, etc....

Looks like Velocities are more than double the price of the Miches, but are available as single hubs so you can get mixed drillings.

The Ambrosio does look nice -- a bit like the old silver Campagnolo:)

Another vote for the Miche's. Had a pair that I really liked, especially for the price.

Another vote for the BHS hubs. I have a pair of the SuperLights and they are much nicer than I expected for the price, and mine came in a bit under the quoted weight. I also like that there is no gaudy branding so they are just classic-looking silver hubs. Mine are Shimano/SRAM compatible though so I cannot vouch for the Campy freehub.

I have 3 wheels from BHS using their parts now. Brandon is the bomb, really easy to get in touch with, and ships within 24 hours.

I built my first ever pair of wheels on the miches. One ride on them so far. Not bad for the price, but I can't speak to long term durability. They are not high-polish items, but the finishing is OK and consistent. Smooth rolling, at least. Skewers are trick looking, but I use horizontal dropouts, so I have a little suspicion about how well they will hold. Note suspicion and no slipped wheel to report as yet.

You might also want to consider this:

http://c-4shop.com/RH-225T-Rear-Hub-RH-225T.htm

I built it with a kinlin rim (they have also the best prices for those) and I got a light and strong wheel that I like a lot. They also claim that their hubs are, fo the most part, made in the USA, if that matters to you.
