View Full Version : 26.4mm shallow drop bar choices?

My present cockpit setup is the Cinelli XA 1" stem - 26.4mm dia, with Cinelli 64-40 - 26.4mm dia. I would like to try out a few other bars with the same diameter but with a shallower drop that the Cinelli 64 bars...any choices?

In the highly likely scenario that there is no way to go for a shorter drop bar than changing the diameter of the bars to 26mm, what choices do I have in that arena?

Oh, and this is the present cockpit of my MX Leader...just so you have a picture in your mind :p

...drink a can of Sapporo beer, cut the can, make a shim for your 26.4 stem and reduce inner diameter to 26.0, open the door to more handlebar possibilities. Lou

If you use the shim, there are some very compact bars in 26.0.

Cinelli 64s are already at the shallow end of the pool (sorry). To get at more modern bends, the shim is your only option to adapt that stem. Don't think a beer can will shim enough thickness unless folded over 3 or 4 times.

I have done this. I bought brass sheet stock from a hobby store because I could select the thickness. Roll up a piece of cardboard in the handlebar clamp, trace the clamp all around. That is the template to cut the shim.

You must use heavier bars if you do this. The clamping force exerted by the XA will crimp the center section of a modern bar which is designed for the even clamping force of a threadless stem.

How about something like a Cinelli Eubios? These came in both 26 and 26.4mm.

alas....but that is why I recommend specifically a SAPPORO beer can.

Pick up a can and you will see what I mean...the thickest beer can made, and refreshing too (don't forget to drink the beer before you cut the can). One layer will provide that additional 0.4 mm needed to mate a 26.0 bar in a 26.4 stem.

Interesting idea about the beercan.

As for the Eubios, looks like it's got the anatomic drops...which are a style I strongly dislike.

Thanks for the ideas though, and if there are any more out there...keep them coming.
