what's the word on a good price for the 800?
do i need to buy their map or does my map (for the 705) still work on the 800?

also, tell me if i'm wrong in assuming my ant+ hr strap and cadence sensor will work fine with the 800. if not, then i'll have to look at bundles.....

-yes to the straps and sensor
-your best bet would be to time it to an online retailer offering a "blanket" discount(20%off accessories, for instance) since it is my understanding that
Garmin frowns upon specific sales on their stuff.
-can't help with the maps question

I might be wrong (and often am) but I believe Garmin's maps are activated and their license is for a single device so I think that if you've activated your maps for your 705 you'd need to purchase a new one for the 800.

This sucks, hard, but I think that's the way it is. I think you could take maps on an SD card and move them from device to device but if, e.g., you wanted to use mapsource to download a route the device and maps would need a license.

Hope this helps. Although I have a couple of Garmin devices (a Zumo 500 and a 705) and am a long time user of theirs, I hope they go out of business, and soon. I despise their licensing policies (I could give a lengthy explanation of why) and their outdated user interface (mapsource) and hope that it comes home to them in lost sales.

Garmin is very strict about their minimum advertised pricing but from November 23 through Dec 3rd they're authorizing a sale on the 800 Bundle that normally retails for 649.99 to be listed at 499.99 May be worth the wait if you're in the market for the 800.

Good info. Thanks

Any word on the head unit only? Or are they pimping the bundle?

On a related note, since it seems I have some shopping time.
Is there anything else comparable on the market now? To be honest I don't even need the map to get around but the gps info vs magnets in wheels is convenient for swapping between different bikes and im spoiled on the large customizable display

If you don't need maps, the Edge 500 is a very good unit.

Just bought my wife a Garmin Nuvi for her car. $150 with lifetime maps, color touch screen, etc. I'm tempted to add a rack to my bike with a 12v auto battery! Would be less expensive than the Garmin 800...

I'm seeing $449 for the unit; 643 with heart rate monitor and speed sensor.

The Garmin Edge 200 and 500 are excellent for this use.
