I am preparing for my return to Beijing for the winter. Typically I live there in the winter and spring, and then return to Chicago at the end of May. This leg will be the first time since I returned to bike riding. I will ship a frame there (they are not available easily in my size). There are concerns about safety, as a lot of people are killed or injured there on bikes.

The biggest obstacle for me will be the air pollution. I wrote a brief article (http://www.tinturtle.com/airpollution.aspx) that describes some of what it is like, but here is a small version of a picture that really illustrates it in a visual way.

But to really get a feel for it, here is the full resolution image (http://www.tinturtle.com/images/gallery2/500AQIDay_Large.jpg).

With the dietary changes and the need to continue exercise thru the winter, I anticipate the need for some out of the box thinking. I am still mulling it over. The good side is that if I get this expedition bike built over there I can head up to Xian or somewhere off the charts and ride. Now THAT, would be wickedly interesting.
