XTR M980 10spd crank w/ XTR M970 9 speed

Anybody know if an XTR M980 10spd triple crank would work with everything else being M970 9 spd (cassette, FD, RD, and shifters)?

Ive not tried it but I'd imagine yes
Only possible issue may be chain catching on the shift pins when crossed. You could possibly address this with a ten speed chain as well. But then the question becomes "will a ten speed chain work with ......?"
