this is the BB i am running on my fixed gear bike, which sees varying conditions. am i going to kill this BB quickly because it doesnt have seals? it certainly isnt a cheap bottom bracket...

also, i didnt realize it was an asymmetrical BB, which limits replacement options...

this is what the campy tech docs have to say about it:

axle L. 111 mm (asymmetrical) - composite and light alloy cartridge - light
alloy cups - without sealings

Just spit ballin here, could you use a Centaur square taper BB instead? Same width, no?

same width, but one is symmetrical (centaur/veloce) and one is not (pista).

the clearance on this frame to the chainstays is very close...

Isn't there a record track BB? Same spindle, but has seals. Probably not cheap.

or you could always use a Phil Wood bb -- again, not cheap...

yea, i think that's the way i'm leaning. of course, by current BB is brand new, and i'll just have to wait and see how well it holds up, then move over to a phil if i kill this one quickly. thanks.

this is what the campy tech docs have to say about it:

The cups don't have the 'seals' in them but the bearings do(3 bearing BB, essentially a 111mm version of the 102, or a triple BB for Record/Chorus). A load of grease inside the cups will act as good seals.

I always thought the symetrical Record 111 was for your use, and 111 Record asymetrical was for triples. 102 Record/Chorus symetrical for doubles, etc.

Centaur 111 ISO taper is symetrical also.

Guess I've been wrong about the Pista.

This is my understanding based on experience & research in the Campagnolo website archive. Recently acquired a bike with a ST Record triple; it came with 111mm asymetrical BB.

Yes.....I really don't think I was wrong.

Yes.....I really don't think I was wrong.

If you look at the current campy tech docs for the current pista line, it states that an asymmetrical bb is required.

Can't speak to the campy docs....but for years always read the 111 symetrical was for track.

Maybe new line is different. That's probably where I'm wrong.

Ralph -

Check the bottom; from the horse's mouth, so to speak:

i'll also add that i havent actually measured the BB that i have to see if it is ACTUALLY asymmetrical...

get a centaur 111mm symmetric BB and an assortment of BB spacers: 1mm, 2.5mm, 5mm

that will give you a modern, sealed cartridge BB and the proper chainline for your pista crankset.

fwiw...part of me thinks thats an error of some type by campy, as every campy pista BB spec i can recall for the last 20 years called for symmetric spindles. you'd be well served to measure to see what's what.

I was looking at/dealing with older ST stuff, not current, so it may well be that the track BB has changed.

I have a C-Record BB, marked 68-SPc on my Waterford pista demo bike. New Record pista crank, 111mm symmetrical, perfect chain line .

when you ride in the rain and wet conditions you need to perform maintance a lot more often
Unless you have sealed bearing. without those just plan on taking apart BB Headset hubs etc and pulling some maintence a lot soner than in the past
Need frame saver also inside the frame
