View Full Version : Mystery Bike Tool (for the old-timers, not the young bucks)

A buddy of mine a work recently acquired a "box o' tools and parts" from an old-timer. He recognized everything except the attached. There are actually two of them, one stamped "Suntour" and the other "Park" so we know that they are bike-related.

Our first guess is that they are axle vises. Anyone care to confirm that? If that is what they are, I can't figure out what the four little protrusions that look like piano-wire bending jigs are for.

So how does one use it?

it's a freewheel tool. shown here at the bottom:
http://www.wundel.com/suntour.html

i THINK it's for actually disassembling the freewheel; e.g. swapping cogs rather than removing the FW from the bike. The rollers are used to grasp a cog between teeth, and the arms are for leverage to unscrew the cog from the others, which you could hold with a chain whip.

Somebody smarter than me can confirm/deny, but I think I'm close.

I think it's a hub vise.

Thanks guys :) That's exactly it!

A gift that keeps on giving, I used his wheel-building web pages just last night to rebuild my front MTB wheel with a new rim.

Oh lord!

I AM getting old.

Not only know what it is, know how to use it, and even worse, still have one!

I have it's predecessor from Var, so I must be older than dirt.

I have a freewheel vice, they are great for holding the large cog while you unscrew the smaller cogs from the freewheel body using a chain whip tool.

you old guys are hilarious.

I suppose you still use tubulars, too?

I've even heard that some of them still ride steel bikes. Can you believe it?
