I have a Deda Superzero seat post in 27.2 and my new frame uses a 30.9 size post. I was planning to purchase a new seat post but now wonder is one of the shims I see advertised would be a safe alternative ? Has anyone had a problem with using a shim to adjust the seat post diameter? The post was expensive (for me) and I would love to use it on my new frame. Thank you.

Generally there are no structural problems.
Just know you have added another slop/slip/squeak interface where you generally put the most weight on your bike.
Oh, and those 'in the know' will make sport of you.

I use them in my Bike Fridays (27.2 posts on 28.6, iirc) without any problem. Otoh, Tom Kellogg told me he wasn't a fan of shims for use with the ti bike he made me, which took a 31.6 post.

Always glad to bring a smile to someone's face

Good point about the slip and squeak. At my weight the post will already have plenty to moan and groan about!

4 K mi this year on my Peg Duende with a Cane Creek shim to a 27.2 Record carbon post.

No squeaks or other issues whatsoever. FWIW, I weigh ~ 150 lbs...

Thanks so much for everyone's feedback. I think I'll try it.

BTW, I've been very happy with the Cane Creek AL shims. Correctly sized and the small lip at the top disappears at the post clamp. Just remember to grease the shim inside and out.

Have used seat post shims with no problems. If well made with good tolerances then it is fine.

No issues, just make sure to clean/grease properly. I had a shim get stuck but good in a frame - my own fault for sure though.

I use a USE shim in my Specialized Epic and have never had it slip or any other issue for that matter.

I wanted a smaller diameter seatpost (30.9 to a 27.2) so it would flex a bit more for a smoother ride.

Thanks again for the feedback. I ordered a Cane Creek shim this morning! Any particular grease that works best?

so no sticking issues. In fact I put in a 30 to27.2 last night so i can run an enve on my Peg--still trying to decide what bike to keep, and couldn't get the saddle back to where i am on my other bike. Not really right to give up the Peg without giving her a fair shot at the same position.
