I think this is actually a very, very good idea.

Kinda one of those, "Gee, why didn't I think of that?" things.

Yeah I like the idea too, I signed up for a heads up when it becomes available here (https://icedot.org/crash).

That said, I find the 60second timer a bit short. Even when I'm not in an accident I rarely am able to answer the phone in time (pull over, pull out the phone, unlock/get it out of the ziploc bag etc.) I can only imagine how much longer it might take after an accident...

Life Alert for cyclists. " I've crashed and can't get up."

Awesome idea...as long as we don't have to rely on the iOS 6 maps app.... :p

When I first read the title, I thought it said "emergency helmet bacon"... Imagine my disappointment when I realized it said "beacon"... :D

. . . safeguards they put on it, don't you just KNOW we're going to see the story about Joe Someguy who accidentally drops his helmet while he's standing outside of Starbucks and ends up with 3 amublances chasing him . . .

yeah i know, as dumb as this thing may sound to some, i gotta admit, i like it.

reason is not too long ago i was out riding in the boonies, pin drop quiet and nobody around, and i got a creepy sensation that i oughta get outta where i was, pronto. main concern was potential for mountain lions.

sure enough, a half hour or so later several sheriff's cars were in the area telling cyclists and hikers/walkers to get out of the area due to a mountain lion sighting.

point being, if something happened to me and i went down, i don't think i'd be able to grab a cell phone. if the only way to notify someone where i was was via an accelerometer that activated a beacon after falling off the bike, well, then that's ok.

of course, as someone mentioned, the dumb thing to happen would be tossing your helmet onto a table post-ride during lunch, and having the damned thing go off. woops....

My last couple of crashes happened outside of cell coverage, go figure...

I got one of those Spot tracker thingys that uses the gps sats for com., but it has the same problem, you have to be able to push the panic button for it to work.

This would seem to be a better mouse trap if it doesn't rely on cell coverage...

It never hurts to tuck a few strips into the vents just in case.

I've been using emergency helmet bacon for years now. I knew I should have went with the patents and trademarking..

My problem with the device is you have to leave your cellphone on for your whole ride. I hate doing that as my battery always drains way down.

if that's true have you ever noticed when you ride in groups you're always pulling at the front, and people fight to get in your draft?

it's not because you're awesome.

I misread the thread title - I was sure it said "Emergency helmet bacon" and frankly I like that idea better.

When cycling in an area bedevilled by mountain lions I would always make sure I carry a few rashers of bacon...
