Does an aero tubular wheel (40mm to 60mm profile) with an alloy brake surface exist? There are plenty of clinchers with these criteria but what about tubs?

IIRC Mavic did CXP30s in tubular. In a cool, almost champagne/grey color. 30mm profile, though, so maybe not deep enough.

CXP30s are porkers.

The obvious ones that spring to mind are Mavic Cosmic Carbones - alloy tubulars with a ~50mm carbon fairing. Great wheels.

I don't think they are available in tubs.

I'm sorry, you don't think Mavic Cosmic Carbones were available in tubs? What do you think the pros were racing from 2002 to 2009?

THat high?? never seen something that tall in AL, maybe 3son something?? cant remember the brand.... they have a nice clincher rim that is like 50 mm but they dont have tubular rims.

Zipp has or had an aluminum set that was nice the 101 i believe, but never seen those rims for sale.

Another option i have seen and im using right now. The rims of the miche pistart tubular wheels. Those are almost 40 mm tall and in tubulars, really close to the zipp ones. If you lace those in 3x front and rear the wheel will get soft and strong. Good tubular.

The rim even thought is for track is machined and anodized so no problems using brake pads.

My 2 cents...

Not all alloy, they would be really heavy.

Velocity ProElite rims but they are 30mm.

Carbon/alloy braking surface type wheels.

Ah, maybe I wasn't clear. I am interested in an alloy brake track as was stated in my query. Carbon with alloy brake track is fine, like the Cosmic Carbone. I agree that an all alloy 40-60mm rim would be absurdly heavy. Remember, in tubular fitment and not clincher.

Hed Alps are what you're looking for too. They also come in tubular.

But I prefer Cosmic Carbones.

There have been a variety of very deep-section tubular rims from Campagnolo and Araya. They are no longer in production and very pricey.

The CXP30s are heavy and you have to have some special loose alloy inserts that the spoke nipple rests on -- you often see the rims without the inserts, and they are useless at that point. However, they are very nice tubular rims. Don't dismiss them.

The Velocity ProElite is pretty much the same profile as a Deep V but in a tubular. They are inexpensive ($46 apiece last time I looked at World Class Cycles) and bulletproof.

Bear in mind that all the aero work on carbon rims is showing that a simple pointy deep profile doesn't necessarily buy you aerodynamics, and it certainly adds weight. If you really want aero, you really do want to go to carbon. If you don't really need aero (i.e., aren't riding 25 mph or faster consistently), then I'd just suggest an alloy rim that is either comfortable or durable, depending on your needs. If you ride 18-20 mph, you won't get any benefit and significant handling problems with a real deep section rim. And in alloy, it'll be heavy to boot.

Cosmic Carbones are fairly portly themselves.

The tubular Cosmic Carbones have carbon brake tracks now.

My guess is there are no tubular carbon/aluminum wheels that you can buy NEW at the moment.

Now, used...you might be able to find an older wheelset.

I wonder, if one had a good relationship with HED, if HED would be willing to build a Jet tubular.

HED Jet 4, 6, or 9 are all available as tubular

Scandium rim with carbon aero fairing

1643g, 1660g, and 1850g respectively

Thanks Bruce. This is good information.

Your welcome

Actually those weights are clincher so tubulars would be lighter

That info is from the 2013 catalogue fresh from the factory

how 'bout that, i should have known they made the jet in a tubular but i just assumed they didn't.

Jet FR but not Jet Express
