SRAM's XXI one by 11 setup has a 10-42 11 speed cassette, as seen on the CC website. For $425! Whoa.

So much for simplicity.

Compared to the Super Record $625.49 11 speed cassette, its a relative bargain.

The high end continues to go up. Same as it ever was (but better shifting).

For Campy, the higher end cassettes = lower weight (Ti on some of the cogs), but not better shifting.
Many Record and Super Record set-ups go with the Chorus cassettes for cost savings if weight is not an issue.

Only $30 more than the XX Cassette...no need for the FD & shifter, cheaper crankset, lighter weight and fewer mechanical issues. Mine is pre-ordered to replace the 2x10 xx setup on the Ibis.

I can get XX cassettes 125 bucks or less all day long(just paid last week $225). Just have to shop around.

From my brief research, it is tough to figure the most bang for the buck... a campy chorus cassette for $260 at 245g vs super record at $410 at 177g for $150/68 g. A comparison with handle bars show a carbon ritchey at $280 at 194g verses an alloy one for $100 at 233g resulting in $180/39g. Lastly, for seatposts, a carbon one can go for $80 at 235g verses $43 for an alloy one that weighs 200g resulting in $37/35g. Looks like a big difference in the $/g ratio for parts. I guess it likely doesn't really matter if your are into light weight, though, since every g counts...even the bolts!

More expensive, better shifting (not that I had much of a problem with the old stuff), less durability. That is either 2-1 or 3-0 in favor of the manufacturer vs. the consumer.

. . . usually equals lighter, but way shorter life. Way out of my cost vs. value territory. Simply not worth it to me to pay so much more for less product life.

DA cassette +/- $180, ultegra 60 bucks. 3 for 1 and 6 of the 10 cogs are identical, come out of the same machine. $120 is a lot for 4 ti cogs. If you look at pictures of the Team Sky service course, they have piles of Ultegra cassettes. Ultegra cogs haven't slowed them down.

That's just a display of British thriftiness.

Suntour freewheels go for $130 these days, so everyone is going cassette,
even Brits.

If they would have spent the extra money and saved the weight they might have won the tour, oh wait they did win. never mind

Wow - 42t - can hub internals survive that type of leverage? I thought the 34t on a 29er was causing problems.

it is machined from one piece and IIRC it takes 45 minutes to make one

Yep -- don't recall ever hitting 200. The Chorus casettes are excellent -- cheap enough for commuting wheels and good enough for anything.
