Love my 585 and just can't believe that Look discontinued it and that they have gone the route of integrated seatposts, $600 stems and proprietary cranks. give us back our 585!!

My frame is getting up there in mileage and not sure whether to buy another 585, go for something different like the 585 Ultra, or another manufacture altogether like Colnago or Time. The 595 doesn't do it for me as I would have great trouble traveling with it as I ride an XL frame.

Any suggestions from the 585 crowd? Another 585, 585 Ultra or a new frame entirely? I'm pretty sure I am not the only one with these questions!

What's your price range? What's important to you? Why not go custom? Crumpton or Parlee would make excellent bikes!

Frame is getting up there in mileage? Thought carbon, especially the quality and price of Look was a forever bike? Am I more glad than ever that I got titanium?

Or just get the urge for a new bike.

URGE! Ha.

Tried a Parlee and C50 and still like the 585 best. Love the smooth ride and stiffness without giving up comfort. Hear the Time frames are nice and the VXRS is comparable to the 585 but have never ridden one.

Like traditional geometry especially as I am 6'3", 210 pounds and don't like a wack of seat tube showing. I'm more of a sprinter and downhill specialist (!) but getting to enjoy climbing these last couple of years.

$$$? Well if my wife finds out I'm looking at other bikes I'm dead but heck you only turn 50 once and easier to plead for forgiveness...

Just built a Time VXR a couple weeks ago. Not having ridden the 585 I can't directly compare, but it is easily the best carbon bike I have ever ridden. Doesn't have that slighty scary hollow feeling that some carbon frames have. Feels the closest to steel of any bike I've ridden that isn't steel.

Would highly recommend a Time VXR, VXRS or something similar if you're looking at that. And they can be had fairly reasonably.

I am really looking for a carbon all arounder. Stiff for sprinting and yet able to soak up road vibration. Seems like I'm describing my Look 585...

If you are willing to try a mass market bike the Giant Defy Composite is supposed ride great and the new Trek Domane had a very lengthy discussion on this forum that would be good reading.

The VXR Looks good. The integrated seat post scares me for travels with the VXRS. Any idea how the fit is compared to the 585? I've got long legs and a realitively short torso. Ride an XL Look with a 57.5 tt and fits like a glove even at 6'3".

One I have is an XL, I believe, and has a 58cm top tube. 19cm or so headtube.

Can't speak to how it fits compared to the 585, but there are geo charts out there for both.

Just looked at the charts, VXR XL is the better fit I am thinking.

The 585s in larger sizes are famous for having some flex in them that's unusual these days. I have a larger 585 and feel its comfort but it's not really stiff like bikes from the years that have followed, so be very careful when people on the net say the word "stiff" that you do not associate it with how the 585 feels.

The first year VXRS was famous for a wimpy head tube in the largest sizes and they stiffened that up in later models. Just from reading I think the older model (round tubed) Times are likely to be closer to the stiffness/comfort trade-off you seek.

You will never replicate what you have, except maybe with another 585. So either buy another, or embrace the change to something else while trying to get somewhat close via recommendations from others. Personally, I'd be wary of the VXRS. I read a number of long-time fanboys of the brand that did not love the ride quality on that frame. Do a search on weightweenies back a couple of years for comments.

"up there in mileage'??

Doesn't really wear out nor are Looks prone to breaking..just want a spare frame?

How about a Carl Strong or Landshark? These guys are known for steel primarily buy can build you a carbon bike with any characteristics and look you like. Or how about Cyfac? And of course there are different models of Parlee, Calfee and Crumpton.

Look 585 don;t wear out.

They are unilaterally loved and revered as one of the finest lugged carbon bikes.

You already state that you love it.

Why mess with perfection?

I have two 585's, one geared w/ a mtb rear derailleur for serious climbing, the other w/ a normal road setup. Love 'em both!

But I have to say my Fierte IT is a great complement to them. My bikes are all big: Looks are XXLs and the Fierte is a 60. I really enjoy the Fierte as much as the Looks. It's a high quality bike, even if it is the little bro to the Ottrott.

Just a data point for you.

Or shop around for a 585 Ultra...

Cheers,

Thom

I posted a similar question a while ago, and got similar responses...hard to find a 585 replacement. Ended up getting a 586, hoping for some weight savings...I think I lost about 18 grams in the switch. Love the bike, though...and there's a regular seat post model.

I love my time vx edge. Not sure if I'd ever need an other plastic frame.

Keep it, Legacy Classic!

I'm on my second 585 Ultra. I switched to ridley noah, then s-works sl3 and then back to a 585 Ultra. I love it! I agree that the BB could be more rigid underfoot but the front end and overall comfort is the best. I'm with the other forumites that the time frames may be the next step and I would love to try a parlee, but what a selection of options and you can still fall-back on the 585.

I've owned the 585,585 Ultra, 595 and 595 Ultra and hands down the 595 was the best riding bike. I thought the 585's were flexy in the BB and the handling was too neutral. 595 was alive, quick and was engaged with each pedal stroke.

Circumstances forced me into having two Look 585 frames. One has been ridden over 30k miles approaching 40k. The other has only been used about 100 miles. There are differences in the tires/wheels, but I will be darned if I can tell a difference I would attribute to the mileage. I don't think mileage will wear one out.

On the other hand, am building a Serotta new to me and may let at least one 585 go if I am happy enough with the Serotta (which I expect to be). So if anyone needs a large 585 keep your eyes open on the classifieds here.

Also, my opinion of the 585 is it is more comfortable, more quiet than some carbon bikes. Whether that is more flexible or not I don't know as I am no powerhouse to flex it anymore. I have a Bianchi 928 which is subjectively super efficient. Climbs and accelerates if you breath on the pedals almost. It too is pretty quiet and comfortable, but with near synaptic road feel input.

Some carbon bikes are a bit dead feeling, but not those two. And somehow, though the Bianchi seems more efficient, the Look is pretty efficient, more comfortable over the long haul and has equally good feedback of the road feel. More of an all around if you only had one kind of a bike. This or that bike may be better in some particular area, but the 585 is pretty high in all categories and very satisfying all the way around. If the Serotta betters that, then I will be impressed and very happy.

And the 928 may be in the classifieds too. N+1 is a terrible disease and I must work back toward sanity in the coming months.

Echo the praise of the 585. I am always surprised when anyone says they are flexy and think it is in a bad way. I am 6'2" and 185-190 in race season. I race my 585 in road races and crits. There is nothing about the frame in XL under a big guy that is in the least bit an issue.

My suggestion to the OP is to keep the Look and get a custom steel. That's likely what I will be doing if I get another bike.

I had two XL 585s. One a regular and one an Ultra. I sold both quite reluctantly. Bought a Large and am somewhat happier with the fit, but I think really though I'm between the two sizes. Princess and the pea here.... I do wish that they hadn't abandoned the 1cm increments with the 585. They used to have that on the 481. Also, I felt the geo on the 481 and prior models was somewhat superior.

Oddly, I feel like my Large 585 is less stiff than the XLs. I can definitely induce more front end twist to the bike when grabbing the bars while standing in front of it and trying to twist it than I could with the XL. Very odd.

What I'd really like to see is some attention to the front end stiffness, a larger diameter seatpost, a return to 1cm increments, and one or two other things and the bike would be perfect. The odd shapes and curves they now have, along with the the proprietary stems and cranks have turned me off Look. Too bad because they really do make nice bikes.

I agree that the loss of the 585 is sad. The good thing is that there are a lot of them out there and they can be found for pretty good prices.

you realize you can cut the "integrated seat post" and use a seat collar right?

Excellent comments all around, much appreciated! Great food for thought. Have a steel bike already but have relegated it to my Computrainer. Almost bought a Parlee but opted for the 585 back in 2007. I think I am a lugged carbon frame type of rider...well at least I like the look of them and the ride on the few I have tried.
Have about 30,000kms on this bike so thought it might be wise to get a spare or another comparable frame while they still make quality lugged frames, seeing most production seems to be moving off shore.

To the last poster, I did not know you could mess with the integrated post on a 595...any info on that?

I am in a similar situation. My 585 is my only ride; it rides like new, but with over 40K miles it's looking pretty beat. Friends don't want to ride with me.

To me, most of the comfort comes from the "soft" front end. The fork is great, but I'd like something like the 585 with a more stout tt/ht/dt junction. Any suggestions?

I thought the 586 UD is a direct replacement for the 585.

Plus you can get it in any color you want . . . as long as it's black!

Yup I want a lugged carbon frame, that is my concern about getting another 585 now while I can still find one.
