Am I correct in deducing from various threads that newer Shimano-spec rear hubs will accept 8, 9, or 10 speed cassettes, while newer Campy hubs are only 9 and 10 speed compatible? I'm trying to piece together some older build projects and this info will help me make sense of things tonight.
thanks, j

When you say "newer Shimano- spec" be careful here- the newest shimano 7800 (Dura Ace) will only accept 10 speed- I do believe that the new 10 speed Ultegra hubs will take 10- 9- 8 but I cant verify that

The exception is the new DA 10 speed hub, which has an aluminum cassette body with a larger major diameter, that will only accept a 10 speed cassette.

I believe there can be issues with the 8 spped hubs if you try to use an 11T first cog, but I'll defer to the shimano experts on that one.

Campy changed the cassette body when 9 speed was introduced and it's been the same since then. Some 8 speed hubs can be converted to 9/10 with a new cassette body, but it's generally not cost effective.

ok, I should clarify. the hubsets I currently have are:
Dura ace 8 speed
Record 9 speed
Bontrager Race Lite 9 speed

No 10 speed, so that's not an issue. Can I go up on the DA 8 to 9, and vice versa?
