I am cross posting this from the C&V bike forum for the sake of MRB from the Paceline forum. It was nice meeting you this weekend. What a great ride wasn't it?
I made the trip out to Montana this past weekend for my 2nd Cino Heroica vintage bike ride. It is inspired by the L'Eroica ride in Tuscany but is no copycat. Cino has it's own history and traditions.
Before the start, Bikes are judged and if deemed "Heroic" are given a special stamp on the ride number. This makes you eligible for certain prizes but bikes of all type and years are welcome. One of the more interesting prizes is the "Most Stylish" award and some folks pull out all the stops to win.

Reed begins the ride with his customary "what is Cino" speech and then sends us on our way.
We travel on pavement for a few miles before hitting dirt. I take a few photos of the riders

With us this year is cycling legend John Howard. At 65 years old he is still very fast and fluid on the bike. He was riding a beautiful Cinelli with a C-Record group.

We stop for a proper lunch at the top of the big climb of the day. Meats, cheese, salads, bread and dessert are washed down with wine and beer (well, they actually had non alcoholic options as well).

After lunch Ron hands out some awards and give final warnings/instructions about the descent into the valley where the little town of Hot Springs awaits us.
Brian wins the "I'm glad I'm not riding that bike" award for the stovepipe special he picked up for 2 bucks just days before Cino. The seatpost bolt broke and he jury rigged a clamp on the seatpost to keep it at the right height but that didn't prevent it from swiveling while he was riding.

A guy nicknamed "Lucky" wasn't so lucky this year. Well, perhaps he was…this could have ended up much worse. He didn't crash.

Imagine riding old bikes with skinny tires on crappy roads for 60 miles. Along the way there are many flats. I had one this year, one poor soul had four. A guy on an Eddy Merckx with 22mm sewups had two and had to abandon. Sounds nuts? Yea, but it sure is fun.

There are some serious athletes in the event. The winner of the "Eddy Merxkx" award for being the first in also won the category for 'most Cino bike". He finished ahead of everyone else on the beautiful Frejus….track bike. He rode it fixed.

An ice cold keg of craft beer is our reward at the finish of the day. Later, there's a BBQ dinner, more awards around the bonfire before folks go their separate ways. Me, I chose a soak in the Hot Springs and a fairly early bed time. Others partied on thru the night.

The next morning we regroup after breakfast waiting patiently for final instructions and more awards. I won a Rivendell tool roll for being the first to register this year.

Finally we are on the road to Kila.

We stop at lunch at the foot of the big climb of the day. Only a little less elaborate than the day before you have to be careful to not eat or drink too much. There's a lot of work ahead.

At the top of a steep, rocky 9 mile climb is a cooler full of beers.
I have a cold one then say my goodbyes and head down to Kila.

Another Cino in the books. Great ride. Great cast of characters. Maybe next year you can join us.

I remember your pictures from last year also. Thanks for sharing. Looks like a lot of fun.
After showing Her the pictures, I got clearance from the tower for next year's event. We'll see how that goes..

Reminds me a little of the Pearl Pass Tour to Aspen from Crested Butte back in the early days of it. Looks a bit like the same kind of camaraderie

^ Thanks for the write-up, Northbend. Yes it was a great ride, and I enjoyed meeting you to. Definitely not an easy ride IMO. We need to get DK and KK on board. But then again, that would just be two more people who would could drop us on the hills. :)
