FINALLY, the humidity streak ended yesterday. Rode up to west point area, it was such a beautiful day. an excellent day to be a cyclist indeed. the west point campus is just beautiful this time of year; though it really makes me shudder going up there. I was slated to go to west point, had passed all of the entrance exams, passed the physical readiness test, got the congressional nomination. then, i had what alcoholics refer to as a "moment of clarity" (name that movie...), and opted not to go. that decision surely shaped my life, for better or for worse. and here we are today:

Two solo rides this weekend, one in the rain and the other in crisp, sunny conditions. The oldest son had an XC invitational in a torrential downpour and the youngest son opened the Fall soccer season with two matches. Periods of heavy rain and high winds certainly added interest to the XC meet and to the matches.

On the way home from the second match, the youngest said to look on the bright side, as he and his brother could have been swimmers or hockey players. Meaning that I would have been indoors all weekend...

Yesterday morning was 64 deg and damp
Roads were very wet at 8:00am, a few light sprinkles. You know the drill.
Went out anyway in the face of possible flats, skunk stripe up my back,
cold water trickling down my crack
and definite major bike wash afterwords.

As always in these situations the hope was that the day would improve, roads would dry up, sun would
peek through, a bit of blue sky and that faint feeling of doom and "why am I
the only one stupid enough to ride today" would be transformed into: YES!

It could have gone either way and you don't know until you're out there.

Oh... btw... YES!

Woke up at 4:15 am to drive to Hyannis, MA for my first Triathlon on Saturday, the Hyannis Sprint Tri... did a .25 mile swim, 10mile bike and 3.5 mile run.

The swim was horrible considering I haven't swam even a lap in about 20 years (signed up at the last minute to race with some friends).... there were 5-7 foot swells and a nasty current... the current helped once we made the turn, but th 100yards out took forever and I felt as if I was going to drown a few times... i survived though!

Bike was fun, passed tons of people, roads were great, but I was still in the red from teh swim and tried to take it easy...

run was slow as I've run maybe a half dozen times this year (all in the last month)... but I finished in my estimated time of 1:15... I'll take it for my first... now if I learn how to swim in open water and run a bit, should be able to drop a good bit of time...

afterwards we headed over to spankys clam shack in Hyannisport for some good food a good beer... then a long drive back home to RI... was a great day...

now i'm waiting for the sore muscles from the swim to subside...

Saturday - Day 1 of 2 of the 3-Notch Century Event - 63 miles, 2500 feet of climbing. Windy as all heck (20-30mph, mostly cross or headwind) but a heck of a lot of fun.

Sunday - Day 2 - 38 miles, another 2500 feet of climbing. Much nicer weather, epic scenery and more good times.

No pix but 2 days of riding...wife at biz conference in beaver Creek...so 2 great leisurely rides of about 3 hours...went out to the almost complete Velodrome

http://www.bouldervalleyvelodrome.com/

'Looks' small but 250 meter.

Sunday...another north and east(trying to stay away from the CU 'give me a donation' ride)..Beautiful days, calm, coolish...need to do more of that instead of just going into the shop early...

... ever. COVAC (Connecticut Valley Century). Rode with my wife who was doing her first 100-miler at age 59. Hatfield, MA to Brattleboro, VT back to Hatfield. Beautiful rolling back roads through farming country, huge sweeps of scenery, a day that started cool and clammy and turned into a clear blue, high pressure fall beauty. Unfortunately, we just forgot to take pics...but we won't forget the day despite that.

Well I had taken some time off the bike and it didn't take long for the spare pounds to show up.
So now I paying for it and trying to burn off the excess weight. Did back to back 50 mile rides with a great freind. I like the lumpiness of the Piedmont around Charlotte as you always have to work and every turn has a new goal.
A new hill to climb, a long long grade to grind up etc.
Yesterday was our first taste of fall weather and there was a good N breeeze to fight all the way home.

Did the usual 50-ish mile loop around wonderful Charlotte Douglas Int'l Airport. Took Sunday off to enjoy the return of football.

Probably not the best way to prep for the Hincapie Fondo...

Yesterday, I rode the NJ Medio Fondo-63miles or something. Great weather with beautiful scenery and the rest stops weren't too bad either.

Highlights were the descents into Pottersville and Califon, the packaged ???? belgian waffles, the ice cream sandwiches from Bex Kitchen - http://www.facebook.com/BEXKitchen, and the police officers at every major intersection.

I really recommend this ride!

Went up to the Kettle-Morraine Park in WI and road some of the John Muir trail area along with some of the connecting trails. Was a great weekend, I managed to flip the new bike but no damage done. :)

I rode the Enchanted Circle Century in Red River New Mexico for the 18th time. I was slower than dirt on an almost perfect blue bird day and I don't even feel that bad about it.

70 effin hard road miles in the Santa Monica's and 30 mountain miles yesterday. Hit up Mulholland, upper Encinal, Latigo and then back up Mulholland. Once back, had a awesome sandwich followed by a bomber of Balliest Point Dorado double IPA and my recovery was complete. Sunday was a fun single track day. PCH was active with tons of roadies and beach goers.

Did the loop from Williamstown MA over the top of Mt Greylock -- the MA excuse for a high peak at 3500 feet ;-). Only in MA do we put lighthouses on top of mountains. Still, about 2500 feet of climbing and a nice descent on well-paved roads on an absolutely spectacular day. (That would be me in blue...)

bravo, good ridin.
Thanks, it was definitely the best weekend of riding in my admittedly short career.

Nicely done, Mike and glad to see that new guy made the ride as well.

Ideal conditions on Mt. Evans this weekend...shown here is my riding partner for a couple hundred feet.

she left when I tastefully informed her that I was not in the mood to be licked today...

Mt Evans, there's a ride I'd like to do. Have to make a trip to Colorado to visit my son happen next fall. Nice weather! The altitude would kill me but a nice way to go. When I lived in Crested Butte I always laughed at people suffering with the elevation. Now it's me who suffers. Payback.

Mt. Evans reminds me of Galibier + 5500 ft alt...though the descent is not as fun (thunk....thunk....thunk.....)

Definitely worth waiting for a "good" day to do it, IMO.

Give us a shout when you're in CO!

My wife and I rode a loop from our house, up to Caribou, down the 505 to Eldora and back. It was awesome.
