Has anyone used Velo Orange cable housing? I was looking at this : http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/vo-metallic-braid-derailleur-cable-kits.html

I have used (and like) their headsets, brakes, seat posts, etc...

Curious - I know Campy replacement cable kits are pre lubricated and that is all I have used in the past...

Thoughts?

I share your curiosity on this one, as OEM housing is all I've ever used on my road bikes, and sometimes I wonder where people get the designer colored housings (silver braid included) that they use for photo worthy custom builds. More importantly, do these alternatives work as well and last as long?

re lubrication - I've found that the Krytox based grip shift cable grease worked well back in the days before the housing was lubricated - all it took was a very thin coat on the cable before insertion into the housing - you don't want anything heavy or gummy. Not sure if it's even available anymore (I'm still working off my old tube). I'm sometimes thought that it would be fun to try powdered graphite from the auto parts store. Mixing that with isopropyl alchohol would make a nice smearable grease to coat the cable and, once it dries, you'd have the graphite impregnated into the cable texture.

I have the blue Velo Orange housing on a Serotta Ti Fierte with a Rival drivetrain. Works perfectly fine as far as I can tell.

I've never used the velo orange stuff, but jagwire makes or used to make a cable that looks like braided steel in a bright silver and darker grayish silver and a copper color. I've used both of the silverish ones and it works quite well. Sometimes the ones that look braided are a bit hard to find, but it's out there. I think the last I got was from universal cycles. I can send you some pics if you are interested but it may be tuesday before I can do it.

I have it on my latest build, both the brake and derailleur housing have the plastic lining inside. Cable operation is real smooth, cuts to length clean too.

Yellow Jersey (the shop) has an excellent selection of cables - especially the old Italian good stuff, like Casiraghi (which actually made the Campagnolo cables at one time)...

Check 'em out and you'll see what I mean. All colors, too.
