Having just purchased a beautiful hors categorie from robert8883, i'd welcome your input on the best compact crankset for the frame.

I will be transferring components from my Colorado II, Shimano 7403, with the exception of the crankset. This will be an 8 speed cassette.

I've been riding the Colorado II with a 7950 50x34 for the past year and found it to be perfect with an 11-28 cassette. The only problem is that the 7950 is less than esthetically perfect, ie. butt ugly. The hors is such a beautiful frame, I would like to find something cleaner.

So far, I've looked at the Sugino OX801d and Campagnolo Athena silver cranksets.

I'm a big guy, 6'4", 180lb, so crank/chainring stiffness is important

Any suggestions for better alternatives?

Thanks

Really interesting option.

Thanks.

Anyone have experience with this crankset? is it stiff?

I've heard lots of good feedback on the hubs. Are the cranksets equal in quality?

VO has a couple on the market too, for less $$. no experience with them though...

A guy I know (also a big dude) has a set of these cranks on his rando bike, and I think he finds it plenty stiff. I've seen a few sets in some shops as well and the quality and precision of their components is remarkable.

If you want something "different" and have the money, check out the Rene Herse cranks:

Otherwise, the Campy Athena silver crank is very nice and would look good on your hors! Good Luck!

I have looked at them as an option.

At the moment I'm more in favor of the Sugino, only because of the option of different chainrings.

The Herse crankset is certainly in the running.

How is the quality of the VO crankset?

I have been using a VO stem and found it to be a little less than ideal wrt finish. It easily pits and picks up a stain, where the original Cinelli is flawless.

I also have a VO seatpost and have found it to be less resilient than I hoped, with multiple scuff marks from normal use.

Get Athena aluminum and bob's yer uncle. You aren't going to 'flex' any aluminum crankarm.

since you are in France I'd guess that TA components would be available at reasonable prices and they are lovely.

I've found TA rings for my Sugino triple but have not yet found a source in France for 50 and 34 rings. No doubt they are available, just my ignorance of the French suppliers. Still learning the ropes here. Hate to say it, but it is easier for me to buy from Peter White in NY at the moment.

Good suggestion though. I've had good luck with the TAs on my triple.

Thanks.

i switched from some 7800 cranks to Shimano's R700 cranks, and i noticed no difference in stiffness.
(though i weigh 125 lbs, so YRMV.)

Great suggestions. Any one of them should do the job. Now the tough part of making a decision!

Thanks

Those are all good (TA, White, Sugino OX801, Herse, Campy Athena), as you said, but how about the Sugino Alpina?

I'm not sure if it's available in Europe. It's pretty much sold out from the US market, although Boulder Bikes (Mike Kone) in CO did have a handful.

Ben's Cycle still has Alpina cranksets for either square taper and octalink bbs:

I swapped out a 740? crank on a 7 speed dura ace drivetrain for a vo compact and also went to an 8 speed kmc chain at the same time - fantastic improvement, did the same thing on another rig with 8 speed dura ace - same results.

Rad Plan Delta in Germany has some options from Sugino, Stronglight and TA.

http://www.radplan-delta.de/antriebe/antriebe.html

You can get the Stronglight Impact and ZLight as compacts. Either of those would work well too (I know xxcycle in France carries Stronglight).

That Rad Plan Delta has some great cranks.

Can you order from them if you're in the States?

More so, have you ordered from them?

Just wondering...a lot.

Thanks for the link to Rad Plan Delta. The most complete description and pictures I've seen so far, not to mention a wide range of cranksets.
