great ride this morning on my new fixie. got up and out the door early, and out before the traffic awoke. being labor day weekend probably helped, very few cars around today, most probably went away for the weekend. this bike rides like a dream. climbs like a mountain goat, floats over the pave. it was a good day to be a cyclist today.

Love the color of that ride. I got out for a quick 24 mile spin around the neighborhood once the passing showers moved through. While I don't really welcome the idea of fall, it was nice to be riding in mid-70s in the middle of the day. Traffic is always light where I live, so I saw maybe 5 cars instead of the usual 6 during the 1:15 loop.

Not much to report, rainy all weekend here with remnants of Isaac. I rode a new Frankenbuild 25 miles tonight with a few sprinkles mixed in. Stopped and paid the nice lady that cut my hair 2 weeks ago on credit when I didn't have any cash on me, and again for eggs and bread 4 miles from home.

with a bud in the Santa Monica's yesterday. He had a epic endurance bonk fron beginning to end. I tried everything to get him to stop and sag in but he was too hard headed. His wife was not happy.

today a 10k trail run.

Tomorrow a throw down road ride in the SM mountains and who knows what trama that will cause. After the ride a short trip up to channel islands harbor for a 2 hour kayak spin. A fun weekend.

After dodging rain on Saturday got out today for a nice leisurely 3:15 with the Rear Admiral on the latest addition to the fleet. No PM on this ride. Ran into a friend along the way, stopped for coffee at the midpoint, we don't ever get to do that during the season. Only one more race left, the fitness is what it is, can't change it now. Ride again tomorrow!

Combo city trail and country road ride yesterday with my wife's family.

The destination was a family member's farm for a pig roast.

Some of us did 20 miles, some 41, and 8 crazies did 82.

I did 82 on my Casati Gold Line S single speed.

Here are some pics.

Three hours fixed with friends on a gentle road ride.
My sister in laws sister wanted to
Circumnavigate West lake okoboji
For her first time
On their last weekend at the lake.
The ottrott's new owner, her husband,
Was enjoying his new-to-him ride
And is paying me a dollar a mile for the bike.

A second group hit the offroad trail
For two hours on the ss pugsley.
(the four other riders were on
An ibis Mai tai and custom Ellsworth, trek and giant
Fully geared, full suspension mountain bikes)
I really enjoyed sharing a favorite place
With an avid cyclist who has been
Coming to the lakes area all his life
And had never heard of the place.
His thumbs up coming out of a single track
Section to a clearing surrounded
By water he didn't know existed
Was absolutely priceless!

65 Saturday on a fun group ride to our favorite farmstand / bakery interupted by a faceplant on some sand by one of the guys (it's always fun until someone gets hurt - thanks mom!). 6 stitches, a new helmet, shifter, derailleur hanger and rear derailleur required.

35 Sunday on cross bikes in the woods. Lots of fun and good practice. The crasher from Saturday showed up on his SS cross bike and crushed us all!

Today, 34 mile recovery paced ride.

Now on to the "honey do" list !!! :help:

Thanks!

I was really impressed with the kids.

No complaints and they did 20 miles.

That's a long way for little ones on bmx bikes.

My oldest son did 82 miles on a 1983 Stumpjumper Sport.

I need to find a new bike for him, as he's taller than me at this point.

None of my bikes fit him anymore.

All of the teenagers took off and beat us by miles on the longer route.

All of them are soccer players and obviously are in great condition.

My niece came in first on this "friendly" ride. :)

Great stuff everyone.

I rode from Shaver Lake to Big Creek to Huntington Lake yesterday. This is part of the route for the Climb to Kaiser. (http://www.climbtokaiser.com/) It only one of the 4 major climbs of Kaiser, but it alone pretty much toasted me.
6500' climbing in 43 miles. ridewithgps track here (http://ridewithgps.com/trips/893652)

Me (on the left) and my bud Matt (on the right) did the 8 hours of Labor mtb race solo yesterday. 95% singletrack. Blazing hot for the first half. Torrential rain for the second half. Placed second in my solo category, eighth overall for all Solo men.

Tinker was there. What an awesome dude. So humble. So fast. Dude comes up on you so quietly. Once you realize it is Tinker everyone immediately lets him pass. Then he is gone. Watched him float up one of the longer climbs. It was awesome to get passed by Tinker. Of course he took the overall for Solo men. No one even came close.

Good tough day on the mtb. Ended up with 75'ish miles after 8 hours of racing. Happy with my result. Wasn't really expecting a podium either. Beer was just what was needed after our last lap...and beer is what we drank.

Did 26m with 5 friends including my brother in law. We were supposed to do 31, but my brother in law had his first fall! Nothing broken, but a lot of scraps and blood on his knee and face. Made for an exciting day and a great story...

Just glad he was OK! Oh, and his bike was fine, his Oakley's and helmet are trashed!:bike:

Just did about 60 miles or so over two days, working on dialing in the fit on the Time.

Since the DNC's in town, it will impede a lot of the usual ride routes I take, so it might make for an interesting week.

Sunday rode alone for 60, heading north thru Berlin, Bolton, Harvard, Lancaster, watching the rain storms go thru, and getting caught in one occasionally. Changed the route a bit about mid-ride to avoid the rain.

My wife requested a fairly flat ride on Monday, which usually ends up with me screwing up and (ahem) someone else getting mildly agitated. We headed to an area I knew was fairly flat thru Stow, Boxboro, and Sudbury that was pretty flat and my wife loved the 30-miler we put together while finding some new-to-us roads. There were even a few decent hills and the wife didn't make a peep. She's actually a very good climber, but sometimes we hit a limit and I get the brunt of it....

Hey, congrats to Liv2RideHard!

Enjoy your ride,
Murph

Went to Pittsburg, Kansas this past Saturday to do the Gorilla Century. Like nearly everyone else I'd had enough at 63 miles with 4hours of heavy rain and winds gusting to ~40 mph.... got caught by the tail end of Isaac.

One of the SAG points was here and thought this was pretty cool. Read the attached as to how much dirt this bad boy could scoop up in one bucket load and check out the picture of the folks standing in the bucket!

Saturday consisted of our weekly group ride of 45 miles, plus 15 miles riding to/from the start. Our average was right at 25mph with mostly calm winds...which is always a nice change. With all the stuff that has happened this summer, it has taken me a while to be able to hang with the group again...but it's finally coming back.

Monday started out before it was light outside as I rode to the start of our holiday group ride, but I only did part of this as my daughter wanted to try out the Serotta Fierte that I finally finished up for her. So I got in 40 early miles (15 with the group) and was back home shortly after 8am. I then rode to the beach and back with my daughter, which was a little over 20 miles. I'm not sure she has ridden enough to tell the difference between the Fierte and her Litespeed Bella...but she does like the Aliante better than the Arione, so it looks like looking for another Aliante.

Sorry about the lack of pictures...I should have taken some :(

. . and friend Evan in from out of town, so on Friday evening it was an easy River Loop with good friends Evan (left) and Kevin. We stopped to see the David Ryan ghost bike on Riverview Road. Ended up with 30 miles and out for pizza at Mario's. I should have taken a pic of the pizza--awesome stuff!

Headed up to North Creek with Evan where he had access to a condo. We did 42 through the hills in some incredible scenery and perfect weather. We also rode along the Hudson for a while near Warrensburg. Blue skies, endless, almost empty roads, even for a holiday weekend. Sublime . . .

I headed up to Keene and got in 46 alone the Ausable River, Keene up to Jay and Wilmington, then around to Ausable Forks and back to Keene on Rt. 9N. Again, blue skies, incredible scenery, roads were almost empty. 9N in particular is a great road along the river with full lane shoulders and almost no traffic. The pic of me was snapped by an obliging lady on the bridge in Wilmington, which is aprt of the Ironman Lake Placid bike loop. The river with mountains in the background is the Ausable from Sitckney Bridge, just south of Jay. With TWO downhill signs, I figured this descent--which I had never done--was going to be really gnarly. Oddly, it wasn't much of a downhill. so why two signs?

Lincoln Gap . . . Holy Crap!

After staying with another cabin-blessed friend in Keene, I headed over to Warren, VT, to ride Lincoln and Appalachian Gaps. I have heard a lot about Lincoln and drove over it on the way to Warren. It's partly dirt, wicked steep, and I said to myself as I drove it, "THIS is gonna hurt." Fortunately I was climbing it from the east and the steepest part on that side is paved.

The total climb is four miles, but it's the last mile that has the teeth. The whole mile is 18-24% and the last half in particular has to be over 20%. There's no letup either--it's ALL that steep. I had to stop three times in the last half mile but managed to get started again and didn't walk any of it. I was riding a 34-26 and that was not enough. You claw your way around every little bend hoping--desperately hoping--that will be the top. But it's not.

Just after I got to the top a group of others started straggling in from the other side, most of them on older bikes--Surley's, Motobecane's, etc. Turns out they were employees from the Old Spokes Home in Burlington. Nice guys and one woman who really reminded me of Fausto Coppi on the bike. Same build and pedaling style. That's her in the white in one of the pics.

I picked my way down the west side, where the steepest part is either bad pavement or dirt, and headed around to come back over Appalachian Gap.

BumbleBeeDave

. . . to climb back over "App Gap" and it's wicked steep, too, but pretty country. The last pitch is 18%--that's the motorcycle on it. And a view from the top. The descent down to Waitsfield was treacherous because of unexpected, parallel cracks in the road. 1-2 inches wide and just waiting to snag a tire at 40 mph. That would be, ah, inconvenient to say the least.

When I got into Waitsfield I rode by Fitwerx, which was closed--dammit! I ended up with 38--but man it was a HARD 38!
